Earlier today I posted that the key on a brand new M4A1 was not staked.  The thread was locked.  Colt has agreed to send an advance exchange and pay the freight to recover the bad one.  Resolved in one day.  Very pleased with their response.

Why is it that I very rarely see the much-hated "Colt Fanbois" post anything, yet there's someone in every Colt thread posting these needlessly sarcastic remarks?

Here is how I handle issues like this....

Foremost, do not act the slightest bit irritated with the issue. Cool and calm....

I do not post anything anywhere prior to contact.

Contact company
Tell them that I am extremely busy and really regret having to contact them
Let them know how much I like and trust their products and how long I have been using them. Maybe even mention a favorite one.
Make it clear that I haven't posted anything about the issue and I am a regular poster on many gun forums (if you are well respected or a moderator, that info can only fortify their view of you as a potential threat to their $)
Let them know that I understand that mistakes happen ( do not say "everyone makes mistakes", that is placing blame)
Mention that I would be thrilled to have one of their shirts, hats, etc.. (You give them a prime opportunity to get some free advertisement. Why would you ask them for stuff like this if you won't wear it?)

They almost always do the rest, for me. If they don't, politely remind them about that "regular poster" part and then become silent. They usually start squirming and running through options that they think you will like. If they still do not offer a satisfactory solution, politely remind that you haven't posted anything about the issue yet and you are offering them an opportunity to provide a solution, but will feel obligated to tell others to beware of their products or services if they fail to act. I have only needed to do this once, but still ended up getting an acceptable solution, for the most part. The guy was such a lying piece of shit that I posted anyways He tried to bullshit me when I knew better and I absolutely hate that.

I have received all kinds of free stuff, from loads of swag to free uppers, barrels, newly released products, etc.. I was even recently offered a very profitable contract from a company after an issue. In turn, I honor their efforts by keeping the problem to myself. I can feel good about that decision because I am confident that if some one else has a problem and is tactful they will get good CS from that company, so why burn them? Business is business.

OP, you should have at least squeezed some swag from them. Always get compensated.

I think posting about it before giving any company a chance to fix the problem, is a dick move.. Give them a chance.  If they don't make good on it, then by all means post it on the net.

Maybe the OP can elaborate, but I don't think some of you guys understand the purpose of the thread originally.  He seemed to be wondering if it was a problem, if Colt let it slip, or if it was a new method of attachment of the key.

Regardless, I agree 100% about allowing a company to fix a problem before denigrating them or otherwise condemning them for a bad product.

However, let's face it, it is this sort of discussion that puts pressure on all companies to produce acceptable products.  Period.

Having said all that, I consider EVERY new gun I purchase to require at least one trip back to the manufacturer.  When that is not necessary I am delighted, but it is a VERY rare new firearm I've purchased over the years that did not require such a trip.  Not material to the discussion, really, but neither of my AR's have required that trip and I'm very happy to say it.  Alas, tho, my son's did.  Currently it is sitting back at the makers for its SECOND trip back.  We'll see how it all goes.

There is NOTHING wrong with making mention of or noting a product quality problem before the gun is sent back or contact is made with the maker IMO.  Keep them on their toes.

Really?  That is sad.   I have bought dozens and dozens of rifles and handguns over the last 10years and only one of them had an issue that required it to be sent in and that was for a recall.

If you have that much bad luck with guns, I would stop buying ones from thos manufacturers.

I don't see the problem about posting about an issue before the manufacturer has a chance to fix it. They had a chance before it left the factory. Mistakes do happen and as long as the company takes care of the problem then there's nothing wrong.

I doubt anyone's going to pass on a Colt just because a few people are getting unstaked BCG's, especially when it's clear they are fixing the problem.

I've got a few Colts btw and on the look out for more

If people don't post about these issues then no ones going to know what to look for. No reason to keep it secret just because they took care of you.

So stating a fact is a dick move? And I guess shipping rifle without making sure its 100% good to go is not a dick move?

Thank god I canceled my Colt order.
