Im getting a Sig M400 for a steal and want to change the hand guard out. Im thinking a 9" quad rail. Im new to ARs so any manufacturer suggestions or any suggestions, comments, concerns would be appreciated.

Definitely KAC or Daniel Defense.

If you just want a rail you can throw on your self, http://www.knightarmco.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=32

Depending on how much stuff you want to hang from the rail, consider a modular type deal like the Troy Alpha rail. You can attach rail segments and keep the part where your actual hand rests more comfortable. IMHO, gripping a hunk of aluminum quad rail with all those edges is very uncomfortable. Saves weight too.

Be sure you get the right size.  All the M400s I have seen all have the front sight base and carbine length gas.  If yours is the same, you'll need the 7" rail.

If you're replacing/shaving down the FSB or yours doesn't have one, a 9 inch would be possble.

ETA - looks like there are some other options out there, so just be sure the handguard you get will work with your setup.

I like KAC, DD and Troy for quad rail.  I like Rainier for the modular systems.

I plan on shaving the sight. How do you guys feel about Midwest Industries? Im thinking a 9" free float quad rail.

I really like my 12 inch carbon APcustom FF.  On the 16 inch carbine it is just right.

There are many good rails out there and I have used most of them at one time or another. MI makes a good rail at a reasonable price, but the edges are fairly sharp so use ladder covers. Troy & KAC are probably my favorite drop in rails. The Spikes SAR is hands down the very best rail that I have used on any rifle. I received one of the first to leave the shop and it is awesome. Yankee Hill Machine also makes a decent rail on a budget. Stay away from the China made UTG stuff, at least if you want someone to take you seriously.
