I went in yesterday and purchased a VooDoo case for my fairly new Colt. I decided I would check out the optics while I was in there.

I am currently saving for an optic and had been leaning toward a Burris MTAC 1-4X24. I thought the variable power would help because I don;t have the greatest vision (right handed but left eye dominant as well - shoot off left shoulder).

However, the salesman really had me digging a EOTech L-3 OPMOD EXPS2 Holographic Sight. It would basically be the same price as the Burris since I have to get a mount for it.

While I like the extra magnification the Burris gives me, I really like a lot of things about the EOTech - durability, quicker target acquition, paralax free, and even the way it looks on the rifle.

The guy at the counter said, since I will hardly ever be shooting beyond 100 yards, the EoTech mught be a better option for me.

Only thing - I am worried I will regret getting it because the Burris offers the magnification which MAY make it easier to shoot to extended targets.

So what should I do based on what I will be doing with the rifle - almost exclusievely  range shooting up to 100 yds, potential home defense weapon, and very occasional short-range deer hunting?

Thanks for your advice!! Been helped a lot here.

Get both :P  Just kidding,  I'm not you but from what you said I'd go with the Burris.  Not that it's better or worse but you can get some magnification out of it which likely will add to your enjoyment.  You went and made a decision to get a variable power scope in the first place.

I would get the 1x4 for what you want to do. Yes you can shoot out to 100 with the EoTech, but it will be more precise with the 1x4 on x4 magnification, plus you can turn it down to x1 and use it like a red dot. Eotech will be fast, but that really doesn't matter for range use.

Now if you got the EoTech and put a magnifier behind it on a flip to side mount, you kind of get the best of both worlds, but you will pay more in the long run for that option.

I have 1 rifle at home with a red dot and o1 with a 4x14 scope. The red dot is for, like you said, closer targets and quickly getting on target, it more of my blaster/HD rifle. The scoped rifle is more for precision, slower shooting and trying to get small 5 shot groups.

IMO, if you are going to get a variable powered scope I would get one that goes higher than x4.

As a side note, I don't personally shoot anything (rifle wise) under 4X magnification.  My ACOG is a 4X, I think it's actually around 3.5 but it says 4X.  My scopes start around 6X.   If I want 1X that's why my irons are for.... YMMV

That is why I am wondering if I should just get the EOTech since that would fit most of my uses. The one I am looking at has a quick release mount. And then down the road I could get something like a Nikon M-223 2-8X if I want to use it to stretch out my shot.

Like I said, my vision is not the greatest but I can see ok out to 100 yards. I don't know if would be glad to have the variable 1-4 power for that distance or would be happy using the simpler EOTech.

I'm a target guy so I would chose something with zoom. I need my rifles to have some kind of zoom. I would consider 4X to be a minimun. However, I'm currently doing a home defense weapon and I def wont have a scope on that one. I guess it depends on what you want it for.

Even with a scoped gun you can put an 45* micro dot of irons on it that way you can have your close range sights and your long range scope.

Look at some 3 gun set ups and you will see what I mean.

Here is an example of 45* irons

Here is an example of scope with off set red dot

get the scope for hunting w/ a QD mount; then, opt for a micro dot
