Hello everyone. I am debating putting my heavy barrel on a metal lathe and taking it down to a more lightweight profile. Barrels can be expensive and hard to find right now. I have family members who are very skilled at this and I don't question whether it can be done but more should it be done. Has anyone done this with good results. As of right now I am just kicking the idea around and it isn't set in stone. Let me know what you think.
Thanks

It is absolutely doable... the company that made the barrel turned it on a lathe, after all.

Plan on getting a kit to re-phosphate the barrel if it's not stainless, though.

I was going to re-profile a stainless barrel so I wouldn't have to deal with refinishing it afterwards but I ended up getting a PSA lighter weight upper instead.

Perfectly doable, but I think I would flute it instead of turning it down.

I wouldn't bother doing it unless it was real "shooter" that held tight groups.

Thanks for the advice everyone. The barrel shoots great just weighs a ton. I will post some before and after pics.

The  main thing to remember is DO NOT GET THE BARREL HOT when turning down the O.D.
