Really 2 questions...My BCM M-16 BCG came with an o ring..what's it for?...also my buffer isn't an H buffer- doesn't say anything on it..does it make a difference?

The O-ring goes on the extractor spring and increases extractor tension.
Use it.

There was a post some time ago about an o-ring that turned an AR into a club in sub zero weather.

The OP hails from California.

We can have a discussion about the many complications of sub-freezing temperatures on firearms function.
The stiffening of flexible polymers being just one of them and pretty low on the list.

There's clearly a reason why BCM ships their O rings not installed on their BCGs. And why BCM also only recommends the installation of their O rings in certain configurations/situations.

That said, it's obviously far from just "use it."

I don't use them. Black insert and proper extractor spring. The extractor needs to be in good condition also!

It is not needed.

Yeah there's always a I heard or some other story thats a exception, not the rule, I suppose crane has it wrong.

If you get the correct o ring, and not a POS from the corner store, then its will be fine

the "O" ring with the SOCOM bolt upgrade kit has low temp capability.... I've had one of the early kits in my rifles since 95 and they work well at 26F.... had to replace the continuous ring as it did not work well with the Wolff ammo that I shoot for local matches...

what is the weight of your buffer?  an H2 is around 4.2oz

Ha ha ... the engineers in warm sunny Florida had similar opinions regarding the Challenger shuttle in 1985.

It was needed on mine as well...
At some point I'll just order new springs for the extractor.

I had to run the o ring in my 11.5 even with bcm carrier and extractor upgrade as well as H3 buffer. I have had mine out for a bit in temps around -10 here in northern WI no issues as of last winter.

Must be lucky, but then I keep the chamber (and rest of the rifle) clean and only use brass cased ammo.

Another minority here, as well.
