A couple of questions for you. I ordered a spare BCM BCG, I've always been a firm believer in having spare parts lying around...Having said that:
I have a Colt LE6940 (maybe 500 rounds through it at this point) and I assume the BCG it comes with should be rock solid. The odds of it failing any time soon should be pretty remote I hope... Is the BCM equal to or better than the Factory Colt BCG? If the BCG is better then I'll likely be taking it up to my gunsmith and having him check the head spacing. In this case, my understanding is that as a barrel is used more the head spacing may change? If the head spacing changes, does it make sense to alternate BCG's each time I hit the range? I think you guys get the general direction I am going with this, any input is greatly appreciated. |

I would shoot whats in your rifle until failure, then replace as needed. In a few thousand (10K) rounds (if you ever make it that far) you can tell us how it went. The replace/headspace then. BTW a BCG might be overkill, but a bolt is a a good to have item. |
| You won't have to worry about headspace changing for many thousands of rounds, the average shooter will not shoot the rifle enough for it to change enough for the bolt needing replacement. BCM is up there with Colt, shouldn't be much of a difference between the two in terms of quality and length of operation. |

From the info stated by some parts manufacturers, Colt, BCM and AR Performance have the same manufacturer and all are individually high pressure tested (HPT) and magnetic particle inspected (MPI) each and everyone, so they should be equal.
Do not alternate using your Colt and BCM bolt on your carbine, if you always exchange you bolts, the bolt will wear faster than if you just use the same one until it wears out at about 10K rounds, some actually last longer than that. When you replace with a new bolt it is recommended that you have it head spaced for safety, but is not absolutely required, odds of it failing headspace will be very very low. As for other spare parts just get a complete spring set, small bolt parts like gas rings, extractor, extractor spring, extractor insert, ejector, ejector pin, ejector spring, cam pin, firing pin, firing pin retaining pin, and a charging handle. For upgrades I would recommend BCM extractor spring upgrade and BCM GunFighter charging handle with the medium size latch. I don't have a 6940 but I have two 6920 M4 style carbines and two 6721 HBAR (heavy profile barrel) carbines, all are running the BCM extractor spring upgrade and most have the GunFighter charging handle. |
