i often had issues when i put a free floated tube + fold sights, the sights are not exactly centered.   i would be forced to adjust the rear sight off center, and for some reason, that always bothered me. (rock river and PSA uppers both)

easy fix was having a barrel attached folder sight that i could rotate to center both sights... and i had most of my rifles that way.

man, am i glad i bought a lapping tool. i lapped the upper receivers before putting on the barrel, and the front and rear sights are dead center... i LOVE it!!!

the lapping tool costed sub $30 from midwayUSA and it's so easy to use. it took me less than 5 minutes to lap the receiver, and i cannot believe it's so perfect now..

if any member has same issue, i highly recommend lapping your receiver so the barrel goes on perfectly perpendicular to the receiver... it's worth the time and money.

What are you using for lapping compound?

I'm using some Permatex valve lapping compound, seems to work fine.  I also have the Midway AR-Stoner tool.

there's been many discussions on that lapping tool so beware of your pitch here

i know some of the arguments are that the tool doesn't fit the same in every receiver

What grit are you using?

It has always been a good idea to me.

I had an AR shorty gov.16" barrel I could not get sited in ,My son-in-law just out of the Army could not get it to site in. Looking in Brownell 's I got a lapping tool from them figger I would try it out on that AR. Well now it's dead on rear site in the center. Got my son-in-law back to the range told him I wanted him to try to site it again for me. He shot it one time walked out look at the target told me I was messing with him it was not the same rifle.

How is the lapping tool affecting the free float rail? Wouldn't it be concentricty of the threads on both the upper and barrel nut rather than the mating surface of the upper and barrel?

I suppose that's true in a way, however if the receiver's mating surface is not square to the receiver/bore it's conceivable that with some play between the receiver and barrel extension, the barrel could be pulled off axis.
