I am putting together my first AR15 and trying to decide if I should go 14.5" with a pinned and welded muzzle brake or if I should do a 16" with muzzle brake. I have been leaning towards 14.5" but want to know if the 14.5" will have enough energy to be effective out to 300+ yards (assuming I use heavy grain rounds etc). Or is it just good for punching paper and should I go with 16"?
My goal is to basically put together a good all around ar15. I am using spikes upper and lower by the way. Thanks in advance. |

Pinned muzzle device locks you in to whatever configuration you select now, when you don't have any experience with the platform. Folks look down on the 16" because of the legal situation, but in reality it's probably the most versatile length. |

Every time I buy a 16" I end up wishing I had went with a 14.5". I always use the muzzle device arguement against myself, but I've only ever actually needed to remove my muzzle devices once, and that was recently so I could get rid of the FSB.
My next build is going to be a 14.5" pencil barrel with a carbine gas system. I don't care if it doesn't shoot sub MOA. I just want something light that will eat everything I feed it. |

I also have a 14.5" mid, and it swings better, but it's more finicky. It occasionally doesn't like to lock the bolt to the rear on an empty magazine, and I'm more or less attached at the hip to the SureFire 212A flash hider that's on there. And after spending any time at all with a Battlecomp, I'm here to tell you that I wish I wasn't. The Battlecomp is amazing. |
