My B5 stock and rail protector came in today, and because I really love shooting iron sights, I'm officially done with my first build. I absolutely love the midlength gas system, and I bought it through AIMsurplus.com for (I think) around $750, when they had them in stock. I'm pretty sure I bought the last one they had in stock at the time, too.
First upgrade was the Colt Pistol Grip. My dad had an old 20" heavy barrel A1, and I liked that the grip was a little fatter than the Spikes grip, so it was nothing to swap them out. Second upgrade was the Magpul Handguard, because I knew the route I was eventually going to take with the rifle, and this was the lightest, most comfortable, and least expensive way to get there. Third upgrade was the MVG, and I love it; I would recommend it to anyone that would listen. The fourth upgrade was the light, and I wanted to test it out before I bought the mounting system to see if it would suit my needs for a dedicated weapon light. After I tested and approved, I bought upgrades 5, and 6 together, which are the rail section, and the VTAC mount. Lastly, I ordered the SOPMOD stock and rail protector together, because I new I wasn't going to buy an optic anytime soon, and shooting from prone with the original stock was terrible. The Spikes stock was painful on my shoulder because instead of padding, it had little pointy tips on the end of them. Also, it was difficult to get a good cheek weld when shooting at a distance, and after shooting about a hundred rounds my face would hurt. I wouldn't change or add anything except the stock, because it's quite a tight fit, and it only locks into positions 1 and 6. I prefer position 1, so it's not really a problem, however, it is something worth mentioning. I really like the cheek pad on the SOPMOD, because it's extremely comfortable, and it holds my extra batteries in sealed, waterproof tubes that are accessible only by removing the stock from the buffer tube. I like the polytac led because it's polymer, and simple. The polymer is lightweight, and weight is important when your carrying a rifle on your shoulder for any period of time. It also only has momentary-on by pressing the button, and constant-on by clicking the button. I didn't want to have to fumble with the light, or worry about cycling through low, high, strobe, or SOS modes, and this light gets the job done at a low cost. I chose to mount the light at the 10 o'clock position because I can comfortably activate the light with my thumb without the need for a pressure switch, eliminating accidental engagement and the wire that otherwise could get caught on something. Magpul sights rock, the 2-point sling is about as basic as you can get, and the rail guard is a rail guard. Every part of the rifle fits together perfectly; the rifle is solid, and well balanced. It is EXTREMELY comfortable, and compact. Overall, I am happy with this setup, and I seem to have developed a polymer fetish. | What advantage do I have of putting a red dot on top of the setup I already have? I have a tac light for darkness, and I have another thread showing that I can get head shots at 80 yards with iron sights. Why put something else on it that's going to make the gun heavier, requires more batteries, and with a large MOA reticle possibly make the gun less accurate? |
