| So i have a smith and wesson M&P15 MOE and i want to put a quadrail on and get rid of the front iron sights and put a magpul flip up sight on the quad rail because i cant just change gas blocks because the magpul would melt! So what im asking is what kind of gas block do i need and what kind of quad rail do i need?? i dont want to order anything online untill i know for sure what i should get? im new to the ar world and want to do everything right the first time. |

Okay i figured that i could use any low pro gas block but i just wanted to be sure. i dont know what the quad rail connects to. im going to have a local gun shop do the install because i herd that the gas block was hard to do? am i wrong? if you're using a drop in 2 piece rail, you'll need the delta ring and handguard cap that goes behind the gas block. If you are doing a free float handguard, it'll depend on the handguard you go with for how it attaches to the rifle. Some use special barrel nuts, some clamp to the top rail of the upper receiver, and there are some that can use the standard barrel nut if you cut off the delta ring. Decide on the rail, and then you'll know what you need for the rest of the modification. As for the gas block, if they use set screws, they are easy to install yourself, but if they require the barrel to be drilled for pins, then go with a skilled gunsmith, or send out to ADCO. |

The best thing to do is to cut your front sight base down and finish dress it as a low profile gas block. Hit it with some high temp flat black paint or cold blue when done. Cheap, easy and the best low profile gas block you could have due to strength and secure mounting (plus it's free). After you've done that, install free float rail of your choice. |

Chopping the front sight works well, but if you're relatively new to the AR, I would really recommend against it.
If you're like 99% of everybody here, including myself, you'll probably change your mind about configuration over the months/years and want something else. Remove the front sight, and get a low profile block for under $30. That way, if when you want to change your rifle around again, and may want the FSB back in place, you can. Once you cut your FSB, that's it. They're not interchangeable from one barrel to the next. The only practical thing to do is buy a new barrel with FSB attached, and not many quality manufacturers offer just the barrel with FSB. Either stripped barrel, or semi-complete upper. So either get a new gas block for cheap, and save the FSB in your spare parts bin, or be REALLY sure you like the new configuration. |

I strongly suggest keeping the FSB as is. You can still add rails, FF it, etc; the fixed FSB is the most reliable sight/gas block you can get. It shouldnt be about looks but rather performance, IMO. |

I just went through the same thing you are going through. I ended up cutting my front sight down so I could mount an 11" Larue handguard on my AR. Since I had a pinned FSB on my barrel it was just easier to cut it down and make sure everything lined up and covered the notch in the barrel. You can find low profile gas blocks that will cover the front notch, but to do it 100 percent correctly you will need to dimple the barrel to receive the set screws. The main reason I just cut it down the FSB was it was already attached to the barrel, so there wouldn't be any issues with alignment of the gas port.
If I could do it all over again I would have purchased the Daniel Defense Omega rail. The DD rails are easier to install and do not require you to change your delta ring and it still give you a full rail without a gap. The DD rail is also free floating so it is better than a 2 piece drop in (my opinion) |

This is the route I would personally take. I've chopped two FSP's and used the as LP Gas Blocks and I haven't had an issue to date. Rails are personal preference and your budget will be key in determining your options. I'm biased towards the KAC URX III and 3.1. Other than that, I've used DD and Larue and was pretty happy with those choices also. |
