I've always wanted to shoot tiny five shots groups, so a couple of years ago I bought a pair od Savage bolt guns, a model 12 in 22-250, and a 10FP in .308.
I spent 16 months going to the range 3 times a week in rain, sleet, snow, shine, terrible heat, and freezing cold, I developed some great loads for the rifles, worked hard on my technique, I logged alot of trigger time with the rifles. I got to where I can shoot sub 1/2 inch groups @ 100 yrds fairly regularly with those guns, I really worked hard at it. About a year ago I read about sub 1/2 groups @ 100 yrds with AR-15's, I have a Bushmaster XM-15 E2s, it's a good gun with more than exceptable defensive accurecy, but a sub 1/2 inch gun it aint! So I put a Chip McCormic trigger in it, and ordered a Varmint upper from WOA, I spoke with John Hollinger a few times and he's a great guy who helped me alot with my purchase. I got the upper a few weeks ago, and my third time at the range with that upper I was able to shoot it as good as I can shoot either one of my Savages. Im still amazed, all that work to get to shoot those bolt guns well, and in just a few trips to the range i can shoot my WOA upper'ed AR-15 just as well!! I carried an M-16 in Viet Nam, and it's unbeleavable how far they've taken that black rifle in 42 yrs!! Just today I strung up five beer bottle caps out to 150yrds, five shots with the new upper, and five beer bottle caps with good clean hits, as well as a 0.293 inch 5 shot group @ 100 yrds, it was almost too easy,
Don't get me wrong, Im not bragging on what a good shot I am, I worked hard to get to the point Im at, and there will always be lots of room for improvment, what Im saying is how great some of the new uppers are like my WOA upper. I am now very happy indeed.

I've never owned a WOA upper but everything I hear about them is amazing. Glad you like it.

Great story, congratulations and thanks.

I'm a bit younger than you, but have lots of friends who got over to Southeast Asia.  Thanks.

I'm a disciple of the WOA uppers as well.

After much discussion with some dirt bike riding buddies and AR nerds I caved and got a White Oak Armament upper, 16", 1:7" twist as my very first AR.  Once I installed a RR National Match Trigger, and tried out  few different loads for testing with RL-15 am getting 5 shot groups a dime can cover at 100 yards.

WOA....money well spent!

Great story.
Thanks for your service in the Nam.
I was born a little too late to get my 13 month, all expenses paid tour.

Wow that's good to hear! I've got a barrel on order with them for an SPR style build and that makes me feel good!

Thanks for your service!

My dad served in Vietnam from 68-70, mainly convoy protection out of Chu Lai.

I have one of their barrels on a SPRish type build. I have gotten about .8" groups as my best but thats with reg 55grain cheap ammo.

Same, but I've found that it likes 69gr Fiochi match ammo. Got sub .5MOA out of it the other day with it.

Thank you for the story and Your Service.  Do you think the skills you developed while shooting the bolt action rifles enabled you to shoot the WOA equipped Bushmaster so well so quickly?  I am sure you did your part as much as the fine rifles.  Bravo.

You are correct. These rifles have come a long way in 42 years. Here's a typical 3 shot group at 100 yds out of my Remington R-15 shooting 55 gr. V-Max loaded by Geogia Arms. Bone stockother then a Timney trigger. (Nikon M-223 scope).

Damn... don't have any personal experience with WOA but sounds like some damn good shooting.  Thanks for your service in Vietnam... sounds like you can take care of business.

Same place, same time period, I may have provided air cover for your dad.

Mine is great. I have their service rifle upper. I wish my eyesight was good enough to take advantage of it.

Great shooting!  I used one of their 20" SDM barrels in a build and couldn't be happier.
