Howdy, I'm planning out my super duper go-to AR. Whenever I plan I get meticulous about researching every little bit of the build, and today I'm trying to decide. on a muzzle device. I'm planning on using a 14.7" barrel so it'll be pinned on and I'll be stuck with it. I know most of the usual players such as the phantom and vortex, but I kind of want to stay away from those. Also out are the ridiculously expensive battlecomps and the like as well as the ridiculously elaborate spiked and twisted models that look like something out of Lord of the Rings. At the moment I'm interested in the Vltor but would like some suggestions. Anyone know of anything off the beaten path I should look into?
Also, if I decide to go 16" on the barrel does anyone know of anything shorter or perhaps with some overlap to keep the barrel length down? Pics and links much appreciated! |

I should have addressed that I guess. Really either or. Flash is probably a bit more important but I'm willing to look into compensators too. My other rifles all have flash hiders so i don't really know how much flash would bother me. My only brake was a pin-on during the dark ban days, but it was more of an a2 with the opening closed in...so I doubt it was overly effective at recoil reduction.
Just want to know the options and what people like. |

I have the YHM Phantom 5c2
It says it has compensating abilities but I don't notice it. It's flash hiding is great though! The price is good too. It looks a little aggressive and it is longer than the A2 but I love it Good luck, Paul |

I am definitely no expert, but I like the looks of the Rainier XTC and from the reviews (here and elsewhere) it is an excellent compensator with some flash suppression. Apparently it is loud for others but not bad for the man behind the trigger. VERY reaonably priced! This is my next purchase.

I have the mini comp on my 16" rifle and love it. Has no flash hidding properties, but it worls well as a brake, and it's small. The mini comp on my 16" barrel is only 1/4"-1/2" longer than a 14.7 w/ A2 pinned |

If flash suppression is real important, I'd go with an AAC 51T Blackout Flash Hider.
If flash suppression isn't real important, I'd go with a BattleComp 1.5. You'll still get some flash suppression out of it, but I have seen some fireballs come out of BC's before. |

I like the A2 fh generally but this is my show-piece ar so to speak...kind of want something special since it will be pinned. But as for the battlecomp 1.5 not THAT special LOL. I just couldn't spend that much for a compensator. I do like them tho. A BC 1.5 would be something "special" to have pinned. I personally don't think $150 is overly steep for your "show-piece ar," but that's all relative. |

I've got the RMC mentioned above on my 16" rifle and IMO it looks great, though it doesn't do squat for flash supression.

I'm dropping most of my budget on barrel, bolt etc...believe me I wish I could justify dropping 150 on a muzzle device but I just can't do it....I also don't understand how 150 can be a fair price for a comp. Which isn't even THAT original of a design either but that's a different story. |

This is the one I run, it works great!
