Hello All,
I've been sitting on a lower for about 6 months now and can't take it any longer. I will be purchasing a complete upper in the next month or so and I'm looking for recommendations. Here is the purpose/philosophy of the rifle and my use: I'm a civilian. Putting a lot of holes in paper. Occasional small game hunting. Having fun. I will probably end up with a RDS but I intend on getting to know my BUIS first. I want something balanced and on the lighter side. I may put on a few rail accessories but nothing over the top. I'm thinking FSP with a 9" rail or flip up's with a 12" rail with a 16" barrel (lightweight or government profile) My lower is a Spikes and I like their product/product line but am very open minded. Budget $ 1,000.00 tops. Thanks for your help! Tony |

Tony Take a look at Rainier Arms and their upper: http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1722 I would add the BCM charging handle Mod 4 for another $35, and if you prefer a 14.5 pinned LW barrel, its another $35 for the pin job. Look around on the site here and you will see Rainier is pretty highly regarded. |

Just get a PSA Upper of your choice and some ammo for those holes that you can make in some paper. They are top notch quality and best bang for your hard earned dollars....OR a Ranier Arms match grade upper receiver with a Kreiger barrel, Spikes nickle boron bolt, with a Daniel Defense Free Float Rail and a PRI charging handle....... |

You didn't mention what gas system you prefer. I would go with THIS or the option with the Larue rail. Add a battle comp 1.5 and you have a pretty sweet set up.
For an even lighter setup, get one of the LW profile barrel upper assembly and slap on some Magpul MOE handguards. These are good if you arent running a ton of attachments like a VFG+light+bipod. I went with the MOE on a govt profile because I am adding a suppressor. Very happy with it so far. |

That's a great idea. How did you pick those particular components? Do I need many tools? Thanks again! Wilson Barrel ER Shaw Blank.. Wilson has a good rep for accuracy, Light Weight, it'll last you plenty long enough and makes more sense for practicality than a chromelined barrel. Out of Stock at the moment.. call and check when it'll be back. Second choice would be Rainier Select Great reviews on these... profile isn't as light as I prefer but its still more sensible than a Gov or M4 profile. The Spikes blems (from Aim Surplus) are out of stock.. check in their industry subforum for an ETA... or go with this - Rainier No Forward Assist Forward assist is pointless for your uses, extra weight. BCG - you can find them online at various vendors for anywhere between 100-250... I prefer NiB BCGs but that is up to you, beware that alot of people are OOS on those right now. Gunfighter charging handle is the best in the business, its a tank. Alpha rail is the sturdiest, lightest, most practical rail on the market right now... can be found used on the EE for around $150. Other options include the VTAC Alpha, TRX or VTAC extreme (being phased out right now so you might be able to find them cheaper) Samson EVO You'll need a gas tube and a muzzle device and gas block as well. anywhere from $30 bucks all in to $700ish depending on what you go with, that a little ridiculous, you could spend $700 bucks on a gas block and muzzle device... jeez. Looking around it seems like most vendors are limited on parts, check the EE for everything before deciding. Tools you'll need is a torque wrench, armorers wrench, barrel clamps or upper receiver vise block, vise, moly grease. Should run you around $50ish minus the vise and torque wrench... ask around in your hometown forum for someone local with tools to help and you might be able to get the use of tools for free... thats how I did my first. It is easy as changing a tire. |

I decided to go with the Rainier Arms Combat Upper. I went with a 16 inch LW barrel, upper receiver without FA, and the BCM charging handle. Since this is my first AR it will be my reference for a future build. The customer service at Rainier Arms was excellent! Only 2 long weeks until she arrives.
Very good recommendations, thank you all. |

Excellent choice! I just bought a complete upper and lower from them for right at $1100 including a couple upgrades (Gunfighter MOD 4 & LW 14.5 pinned barrel) Fired 110 rounds last weekend to sight in BUIS and get a feel for it. Smooth and zero issues. Very happy so far. Off to sight in scope tomorrow...... |

GG&G Dominator upper free floatedhttp://www.gggaz.com/ar-15-m4-accessories/barreled-upper-receivers.html I have confirmed that they use only LMT upper and barrel's from both companys by asking them through tech support email.
I love mine and its unreal accurate and very well built. It has all of the different rail panels and grip panels with it and 45* offset rail. Comes with GG&G's killer folding Iron sites that are very sturdy and a nice flash hider all included in price. |
