I am looking to buy either a Colt LE901 or a Colt LE6940p I am mainly looking for a range toy so which rifle should I get?

The 901 when all the parts are available will offer more flexibility.

This. Plus the 901 is a DI gun. Not personally a big fan of piston AR's. YMMV
