I have a friend with a Colt 6920 complete upper that wants to change over to a 9mm. He will let me buy the upper but I have no idea what a good price would be.

What would you say a good price for a used 6920 upper? He was thinking about $400-450. I thInk it has a flip up rear on it also.

Sounds like a good deal.  Colt was selling them for new with a flip-up sight for $685, Surplus ammo has them for that price in-store and I think $690 online.  How many rounds and what condition is his?  Without knowing that I'd still probably take it for that price!  $400 would be awesome!

Round count has to come into the discussion.  Does it come with the BCG, charging handle, carry handle, you said it has a flip up BUIS, what brand?  I put optics on my ar's so no carry handle may not matter to you either.  If it is the colt bcg and charging handle and the round count is low, that seems like a reasonable price.  I have bought two 6920 upper takeoff's, basically NIB, with bcg and charging handle for right around 500 dollars which I thought was a reasonable price.  If it has been shot a lot, not as great a deal to me.  I don't like unknown round count firearms.  For a little more you can get new or close enough to new.

Check the bolt and bcg for the colt markings.  Lots of people consider a complete upper regardless of what make the insides are.  He is your friend so the bolt and bcg are probably colt, but checking doesn't hurt.  Should have the colt "C" and MP markings if I recall correctly.

It is complete with Colt bcg and bolt. All parts have C stamps and barrel is correct as well. I am not sure about the round count but I will double check when I call tomorrow. He has the carry handle for it so I may see if he'll throw that in too.

He said $400 works for him so it sounds like I should grab it while it's available. I'm working on my first AR/first build so this would be a great start.

Assuming the barrel isn't shot out that's a steal for a complete Colt upper half. You would be crazy not to buy it.

Until recently, Colt was selling complete 6920 upper halves on their site for around $699 if I remember correctly. Hell, I pay somewhere around $200 to $250 just for a freaking 6920 barrel.

Since genuine Colt parts can be so damn spendy, I've actually been buying complete LE6920 carbines to tear down and part out for my other Colts:

Well I now own, not physically yet, a Colt 6920 upper. He gave me these details on it and now I am even more excited about the deal.

Complete 6920 upper: brand new Colt barrel (a few test rounds), new Colt bcg, flip up rear sight (not sure of brand), and a Knights Armament RAS rail. The upper receiver has some wear marks but nothing major. For $400 I think I can overlook them for now and touch them up.

Now I am just waiting for my lower to arrive in the next couple of weeks and attempting to find a complete lower parts kit in stock.

Wow, it's got a RAS too? Nice work

If the backup sight came from the factory it will be a Matech flip-up.
