I just purchased my first AR......a stag arms model 1 - 5.56
Anyone care to share their thoughts on some basic mods? |
|
I have big hands, I love the Magpul MIAD over the standard pistol grip. Also, an optic? Primary Arms has some good red dots for a decent price if you wanna save some money. Or spend a few hundred more and get an Aimpoint...
Just depends on what you wanna do with your rifle and for what purpose... |

Welcome to the what we all call here black rifle sickness or black rifle disease, you have it now and there's no known cure. Also what is required of new and old members is to post a picture of their new AR, help instructions below. The first thing we members here want to know is the main purpose of your AR and other possible uses. Basic things before the mods are at least several mags, 4 to 7 30rd mags is a nice start either Magpul PMAG or USGI type aluminum mags and plenty of ammo either half case to a full case. Then the first basic is to get a good sling like the Viking Tactics VTAC two point sling, it is great for general purpose, if you wanted something geared towards carbine classes and combat practice take a look at the Vickers VCAS two point sling. After that just shoot your carbine a lot and find out what features of it you would like to improve like sights, grip, buttstock, but you might want to add a tactical light first before you mod it, if you're going to use if for home defense. I think it's too easy to buy stupid shit when you first start out. Chinese junk like cheap optics, crzp lasers etc.shoot and learn for awhile I agree 100% with Aimless' statement. I know firsthand because I have been guilty of it myself. I bought/traded for my gun at a local gunshow. It's a carbine. It came equipped with the most God-awful ugly ass "fat" handguards you ever wanted to see. I really hated them. My friend made me feel like shit the whole time we were there and pressured me into buying a cheap ass rail because that's all I could afford at the time. It stayed on there for a couple of months. But the more I looked at it the more the terrible fit, excessive weight, and general lack of quality started to bug me much more than the original ugly M4 style plastic handguards. I wound up putting the originals back on. I have absolutely no use for the other cheap ones I bought. Sad thing is, neither does anyone else and I don't particularly blame them. I would have to pay someone to take the pieces of shit. I had fallen victim to a friends pressure and pressure to not have a "stock" gun. That was money I could have spent shooting rather than throwing away. Live and learn. I have. I suggest if your gun has adequate sights the stock pistol grip is liveable to buy a sling and ammo. Have fun and take pride in the fact that you haven't butchered your very first AR like so many have. |

I don't remember this many new owner posts since the last pres. election? ah boy's read your way through old posts and ask direction. Theres alot of way's to skin a cat so to speak! never hurt's to say what $$$$$$$$$ you can afford! Don't worry on low buck entry. A shooter knowin his $500.00 rifle is leap years ahead of a shooter with high dollar shit that don't know squat! what you expect out of a rifle/upper. Say I'm only gonna shoot steel case, ect. or I want MOA @ 300 yds AIN'T HAPPIN with steel case! bust soda cans @ 100 maybe. gotta be a bit more specific........... |

seriously though OP, I would shoot the piss out of it and become proficient with the iron sights, make sure the rifle is reliable, etc The only things I'd buy are ammo and pmag. |

Like others have said, throw your money into more mags and ammo. If you were to do anything else you could upgrade the stock to a CTR if you want the quick detach for sling mounts and the lock or just go with the MOE stock. You could upgrade the handguard to a MOE, too, if you wanted.
Plenty of time to get a red dot. When, not if but when, you upgrade to optics you are going to want to lose the carry handle anyway. Take good care of it. You can sell it to recoup the cost of an iron sight. Troy Ind. is the best. Snag it on the EE to balance out your cost. For your eventual optic, I recommend Aimpoint. I'm kind of biased like that, though. ETA: Hello! You definitely need a sling. Don't go cheap! Get a good one. |
| Nice rifle. I just picked up my first 5.56 AR last night. I went through the accessorizing that everyone above is talking about when I got my M&P15-22 in December. Now I have a drawer full of junk. When I got my OR, I knew I was going to eventually get a scope for this one. I got the rifle, extra mags, front and rear MBUS and a case of 5.56. That's it for now and I made a commitment not to buy the scope until the case of ammo is gone. |
