I've been wanting to buy an AR15 to do some long distance shooting, well long distance for the 5.56.  I know most will say to go with the .308 or AR10 but for some whacked reason I want to get as much as I can distance wise out of an AR15 platform.  So, having said that here is where I'm at in this journey right now.

I was going to start with a factory built rifle that was meant for this like the DPMS Mini SASS.  Unfortunately I can't seem to find one anywhere in this area.   The DPMS Mini SASS is just about exactly where I'd want to start and build on it from there.  Since I couldn't find one I started looking elsewhere and thought maybe the Bushmaster Varminter would be a good platform to start with.  But just looking at it I already see quite a bit I'd want to change on it or have to add to it.  When weighing the cost for what I want to do the Mini SASS is just a much better option.

So, now I'm looking for everyone's opinion on two different things.

1.  Is there anywhere out there that I could get a DPMS Mini SASS that I may not be thinking about?

-or-

2.  Is there another platform out there that I should consider for what I want to accomplish?

Thanks in advance!

Check out aim. They have a nice 18" spr upper for 799 that would work really well. I plan on getting one soon. Add your lower,an a2 stock and a match trigger and you should be set.

When you say long range, exactly how long are you talking?

I've been extremely happy with my Noveske 18" SPR. I've only shot it out to 800yds so far with great success and I plan on seeing how much further it will go in the next few weeks. Ammo i'm primarily using is Hornady TAP 5.56 and MK262. I was banging a 12' x 6' steel plate consistantly once dialed in correctly.

I've actually heard good things about DMPS barrels but, have no first hand knowledge or trigger time on one.

I'd love to hit 1000 yards but I know that will be tough.  I'd love to be hitting accurately at 800 yards though.

I would go for long range the 6.5 Grendel than 5.56 IMHO. But if your heart is set on 5.56, get a barrel twist that would stablizied 75 grains+ rounds.

I once tried shooting my DPMS 1-9 twist 20" flat top upper in an F-class shoot  600 and 1000 yards and I was very surprised to see I could hit the black pretty consistently. The wind was light and right behind me so that helped. I used hand loads of 75g Hornady with 23.9 g of Reloader-15. So yes it can be done, just don't expect to be competitive.
