While I'm not new to the platform, my first AR build will be complete soon. I've got 220 rounds of various ammo that I purchased to find what my new stick likes. I plan to shoot about half of each box and determine what works and what doesn't work for me and my rifle.
I'm familiar with the issues of shooting with a hot bore, but have never had the opportunity to shoot an AR slow enough to allow for a cool down. In my experience, we just shoot the things and hope for the best qualifying score. I'd like to actually have some quantifiable data for my rifle, and I'm curious what the best way to do this would be. I'm thinking maybe shoot 5 successive shots, rest a minute, then shoot the other 5 from the box. Then let the rifle sit a bit, and continue on in this way until I've tried out everything I have. Hopefully this will keep the bore cool enough, but not so much as to make it seem like I'm always shooting from a cold bore (which I won't be most of the time.) While this won't be my typical shooting style, I'd really like to make sure as many variables are out of the equation while I'm testing out ammo. I can account for the heat during extended periods of fire at a later time. Right now I just want to see what yields the best results. Do you folks have any suggestions? |

Let it cool, clean the bore, fire a shot or two to re-foul, and shoot a couple groups.
Repeat for each type of ammunition. The key is consistency. Eliminate variables...so you need to treat each type of ammunition the same. Assuming you are using boxes of 20rnds each, I'd shoot three 5 shot groups with each ammunition type...this will also help eliminate user error vs. one or two 3-shot groups where you pull a shot. |

While BSCMan probably has the more accurate and correct method, I'm more of a "shoot and see" guy.
After all, if the rifle is ever used off the range, I won't be able to call a time out and let the barrel cool. I want to know how it'll group after 50 or 100 rounds. Not that I plan on shooting that much at one time ever ... |
