I have a colt govt model, I think its a 6551. No bayo lug, slabside, with flashhider. I really want to put a scope on it. Can I find a Colt Flatop upper. if so what size hole does the pivot hole need to be?  Does this gun have any collector value? I think I understand that it is a "transition" gun???? The serial starts with GS someone stated that meant Goverment Service.  Would I decrease the value of the gun by replacing the reciever or should I sell this gun and buy a flatop rifle.
thanks

If it's a factory R6551 it should be marked "Target Model" and have a government profile barrel.  It may or may not have a bayonet lug.

If it is and it's factory, it might be slightly collectible, as it is the closest model Colt ever made to the M16A2, and generally, the closest model to a semi-only military clone they've made (unless you count the SP1 as the M16 / R604 - but most people were looking for M16A1 clones).

If it's a slabside, it has the larger front pivot pin diameter, there are several solutions to getting a flattop upper for it, but the easiest would be to simply get one of the new production Daniel Defense "big hole" flattop uppers.  That being said, if it's a factory R6551, the most I would do is build a "spare" upper for it on a DD upper, I wouldn't take apart the factory rifle.

Its marked Goverment model. and its what was on it when I bought it new. I have no proof of that. I no longer have the box. I am not sure its a 6551, just what i had read somewhere. Could have been another model. maybe a 6550. I really am not sure.  But I do know it came in a colt box and was complete and new 15-20 years ago.

"AR-15A2 / GOV'T MODEL" is the R6550.

If it has no bayonet lug, it should be an R6550K.  Do you remember if it came with a .22 conversion kit?

There are very few "collectible" Colt rifles, but these are "more" collectible than most others.

As far as the pivot pin and flattop upper, same applies.

I'm assuming I'm correct in assuming we're talking about a 20" rifle with fixed stock here?

I just kind of assumed that when you mentioned the 6551, but it occurs to me that you never did mention what configuration its in.

Seems maybe there was a 22 kit. I have no Idea where it is now.back then 556 ammo was cheap . Although I have shot it very little. I wanted to use it to hunt coyote, Needed a scope, eyes are not what they used to be. It does have the pencil barrell with an A-2 upper. So in you opinion I should either buy an extra complete upper or sell this and purchase a flatop rifle?

I had a 6550K.

20" gov't profile 1x7" twist barrel with flash hider but no bayo lug.

GS prefix serial number slab side lower with .154" trigger and hammer pins.

No sear block and .312 large hole front pivot pin.

It was the one with the factory .22 conversion kit.

I purchased mine in 1990.

Does yours look like this?

Yours probably has the gov't profile barrel and not a true lightweight.

Check your front pivot pin diameter before you buy an upper. New ones are .250" and yours may be .312" like mine was.

A conversion pin will be necessary if you go that route.

IIRC Daniel Defense made a .312" flat top upper receiver at one time, but I don't know if it is still available.

It's really your call as to whether or not to get a new upper or sell the whole works and start over.

All though I can not find any info. on pre-ban SER. numbers starting in GS (GOV'T MODEL) I think its a pre-ban. You can call Colt and they can tell you when it was made. Those models are a little rarer than most. Assuming its all original and depending on condition it should bring $1200.- to $1800.-. Pre-ban lowers go for around $500.- to $700.- from those of use in AWB States.Hope this helps you in deciding witch rout to take.

Find that .22 conversion kit and keep them together - as pre-bans go, that's a nice one. I would simply get the upper I wanted that would directly fit the lower and use either upper depending on application. When you have the A3 upper, you can get scopes that fit directly on it, which removes a lot of the hassle in scope mounting. You can also pick up a carry handle for it and sight that in at 25 yards as an alternate system. Lots of guys would love to have that set-up - a classic 20" Colt with an A3 scoped upper to also use. I'm assuming you want the new upper also in 20"? Consider a 16" before buying. In fact, a 16" mid-length gas would be great with the fixed stock. That would look like this:
