I am looking into getting a 14.5" barrel and I have a few questions.

1.) is 14.5" considered an SBR? If so is that why the muzzled devices have to be pinned from the factory?
2.) What  manufacturer would you recommend for a 14.5" barrel? and what twist rate?
3.) Can I purchase a 14.5" barrel and then attach my own muzzle device on it without it being pinned?

Thanks.

This topic comes up a lot, so you can probably find all the answers you need in these pages.

1. Anything shorter than 16" barrel length is considered an SBR. Permanently attaching a muzzle device by methods approved by the ATF to bring the overall barrel length to 16"+ is considered legal.
2. There are many many varieties and brands. Do some reading and you'll see. Ultimately, buy what YOU like.
3. There are several theories on this. If you buy a barrel without something pinned, and have other parts that could be construed as weapon construction, you could technically be fined/jailed/whatever. Best bet is either buy one already pinned, or do it as soon as you get the barrel, before installing on any other part of a weapon.

Yes a 14.5" barrel on a rifle is a NFA item.  If the muzzle device brings the barrel to 16" AND if the device is permanently attached (per BATF standards) then the barrel is ok for rifles/carbines.

2.) What  manufacturer would you recommend for a 14.5" barrel? and what twist rate?

Twist rate, 1:7 all the way.

great barrels can be had from Colt, Noveske, BCM, LMT, I'm hearing good things about Spikes (but I've not owned one) and Palmetto.

3.) Can I purchase a 14.5" barrel and then attach my own muzzle device on it without it being pinned?

Unless you have a NFA tax stamp for a SBR (short barreled rifle) or you're using the barrel on a pistol upper you can't legally install the 14.5" barrel on your firearm.

I really suggest if you don't want to go the tax stamp route to get the muzzle device pinned by a somebody who knows what they are doing (like ADCO Firearms).

If you want to discuss the legality of owning a 14.5" barrel - but not having it on a pistol nor having a tax stamp I'll move this thread to our Legal forum.  Where you all can discuss 'constructive intentent' and all that other legal stuff.

Unless you have the tax stamp in hand, or the pistol lower; I would suggest not keeping a non-pinned sub 16" barrel in your home.

If you want a 14.5 without going the SBR route, you would need a perm attached extended A2 flash hider, or you could go with a 14.7 with a perm attached standard A2 flash hider.
