Is it possible to get a rifle that looks like this- http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=2903
for a sub-$1000 budget? I know I won't get DD quality for that budget, but are there any spots where I can go "entry level"? Gun will be used to punch paper and ping steel mostly. someday I would like to take a course, but it seems like a long way off. |

The DD is a good piece of kit, but have you looked at any others out there? |

I would save a little longer and get the DD if that is what you really want. However, if your maximum budget is $1000 then I would go to Pallmetto State Armory and get their 16'' Mid-length, Chrome-lined, Rifle Kit and order the following upgrades, Magpul MOE stock, Midwest Industries T12 rail package w/ low pro gas block. Add a stripped lower and you have a decent carbine that has the same look and gas length as the DD. for about $750, leaving enough to get some good BUIS, a VFG (if you want one), a couple PMAGS and a sling while still remaining below your budget of $1000. |

Quoted: I have been all over the sponsor links. I just used that link to show what style rifle I would like. 16" barrel mostly hidden by the quad rail up front. I'm not scared to build one from scratch if it is less expensive to go that route. Aside from want, is there a reason why you want a quad rail handguard? |

Looks??? Absolutely, go to PSA or Delton and get an upper, put the DD Rail on it over a YHM lo-pro gas block. Get a PSA lower with a parts kit add a Magpul CTR and trigger guard. Looks the same. As a shooter who can use my guns without driving to a range, thus shoots at every chance i get, will there be a perceptible difference between PSA and a DD, assuming the only other ar i have shot was a friends RR operator? |

Easily possible. My friend built something very similar with mainly PSA parts and it cost ~$800 including a Troy BUIS, MI 7" quad rail, and Magpul VFG. The rifle you linked doesn't even have sights, but you can pick up a Magpul MBUS set for roughly $80. Of course, the longer rails will run you a little more than the shorter ones.

Having both a complete DDM4V3 and two other carbines built with PSA uppers, with several thousand rounds through each, I can say that I have had zero FTF/FTE with any of them. They shoot similar groups and I wouldn't hesitate to use any of them if SHTF. Having said that though, there is something intangible about the DD that just makes it "feel" like it is a better weapon (could just be my sub-concious bias) and it would be first choice as a go to gun for SHTF. Either one will serve you well and it's hard to beat the price/specs of the PSA, but I would still lean towards saving for the complete DDM4V5 as my first and only AR. |

Quoted: Quoted: Aside from want, is there a reason why you want a quad rail handguard? Nope. Is there any serious downside to having them? aside from weight i assume? Downsides aside from weight? Only that most users will never use all that railed real estate. If you are not going to use it, why have it? I would at the Custom DD uppers from Paul and the guys at PKFirearms. |

[/quote] I won't speak for anyone else, but aesthetics does play at least a small roll in my firearm decisions. if i don't care for how it looks i won't be spending that kind of money on it. Thank you for the heads up on PKfirearms. I will check them out. |

Weight between a good quad rail and a good tube is negligable. Also why have a 12" tube if you dont use the magpul grip sice your not using the whole tube? |

Also why have a 12" tube if you dont use the magpul grip sice your not using the whole tube? Because with my 37" sleeve length, I do not need the AFG. I have been using a similar grip style on A2's since 1988. |
