Greetings,
I live in NJ and was wondering what the collective thinks would be the ideal ban state muzzle device.... no flash hider. This would be for a general use AR shooting out to 300-400 yards or so. Also be used in local 3 gun shoots. |
The problem is the BATF stopped certifying brakes when the federal assault weapon ban ended, so any brake manufacturered after that you would have a hard time proving it was not a flash suppressor. I know of one brake that I see on post ban guns and which the owners told me the manufacturer assured them was legal where I know the manufacturer has stated it's a flash suppressor to other people. I think the safest thing is to ask for a BATF letter.

| I also live behind enemy lines in a ban state. I like the YHM Phantom 5M2. You may like the 5M1 Phantom model with the points on the muzzle end but it is a little to "Mall Ninja" for me. Both of those models are OK in Mass and are promoted and advertised to be "Not a Flash Hider". I do think you will be OK with either and the quality and workmanship of YHM products is excellent....<><....:) |

FSC30/556 was the last muzzle device that the BATF issued a ruling on to deem it a brake. They've said before that they won't do this any longer.
Any device that has a closed end like a miculek, dynacomp/BC/Griffin/TTT/etc, cavarms, RRA mil brake, or Phantom brake is a brake NOT a flash suppressor and you'll be gtg. I have 2ea of both the FSC556 and Dynacomp. It's tough to say I have a preference. Or just get out of NJ.. I did

OP,
Since I imagine you can handle the vicious recoil of the mighty 5.56 without the aid of a brake, you might avoid noise and other complications by having a plain thread protector from Adco permanently affixed. You will have to start with a 16" minimum barrel length however. |

Troy Medieval Muzzle Brake is not terribly expensive, not terribly loud, looks pretty cool.
Flash Suppressing Compensator 556 is not a flash suppressor per the ATF, is a bit pricey. I don't know if the tines would stand up to the rigors of chasing Charlie Tangos through the Pine Barrens. I have both; I don't know that I'd drop a bill on an FSC 556 again, but I have no complaints with either. HTH, WTF |

I like the spikes Dynacomp. It came already pin and welded with the spikes upper. Here's a Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVzL0wjYgcw I have one of these here in NJ and it is really nice. Ive only shot a few hundred rounds through it but compared to the ar's I carry at work, the Dynacomp is alot quieter and you can tell the differance in recoil. compared to a standard muzzle break. I love it. |

EGW makes a neat muzzle brake I was looking at. They are good folks; worth a looksee I have had two of these. They look like an A2 birdcage from the side but are a brake in the front. The Gen 2 has extra holes in the bottom side to keep 16" barrels from dropping too much. Excellent quality and not too loud. I am thinking of getting another for my dissy. |

rainier armes - XTC Compensator. its loud as hell for someone standing behind you, but NOT to the shooter or anyone standing to your right or left side!
reduces muzzle lift and kick back. i couldn't believe how it performed until i shot my buddies ar with a A2 birdcage flash hider. and vice verse. he ordered one after shooting my ar. |

I would look at the Battle Comp. It seems that they have become popular in NJ. They are a "compensator" and actually work well as one. +1 to this I have one on an Armalite AR10 and love it! I also have a Troy Medieval brake on a Stag Arms AR15 build and am quite happy with it as well! |

except for the horrible noise, the mini-y comp works really great. That is a true statement but kind of like "except for having syphilis she's a great girl" That's why there's penicillin........... Back to the original question, any "device" with a CLOSED end is a brake/comp.I like the PWS FSC (an older choice),Battlecomp,Spikes Dynacomp, and the closed end YHM brake |

Personally I don't see the need them on 5.56 guns, but on .308 and AK's in 7.62X39 they work very well. |

Unfortunately, BATF rulings don't mean anything for people in ban states. It's up to the state to decide what is and isn't a flash hider. Having a BATF letter certainly can't hurt your case, but it really doesn't mean a hell of a lot to a state judge ruling on state law.
