I am working out an issue wth a rifle. it is a piston system, midlength, 6.8, rifle buffer.  I dont know the weight of the buffer. it is a standard one i took out of a gun years ago. stock is a ACE. Barrel is a rainier arms ultra match

when shooting, the gun would fire, eject the brass, reset trigger, but not pick up the new round.

I built this rifle myself, i sent the rifle to the piston company. they opened the gas port a little and got it running good on a carbine lower. Got the upper back and i stiil had the same problem with my lower. I cut a couple rounds off my buffer spring. It started being hit and miss. I pulled on of the weights out of the buffer. Now it runs good.

Now the question, would you go with a lighter buffer system and reduce the amount of gas needed, or would you open the gas port and use a heavier buffer system?

I am leaning towards less gas and lighter buffer

PS. no i am not telling what piston company. they have been great with working on a rifle that i built

I would leave the gas alone and just adjust the buffer weights as needed.  Less permanent and leaves more room for adjustment later on.

Neither am I...

I'm just not a big fan of permantly modifying a rifle if there is another way to fix an issue.
