Will an 18" mid length barrel that is cut down to 17" work to bring everything closer to what it needs to be or am i ruining a barrel.

it's fine where it is. a shorter barrel will reduce velocity and the amount of gas cycling the bolt. Money better spent elsewhere IMHO

Why do you want to cut an inch off the barrel? Confused

18 to 17? that makes no sense, but if you mean 18 to 16 go for it if that's what you want. i would have ADCO cut it though.

a 17' barel is suppose to be closer to the optimun for a mid length system

Your putting way to much thought into this....

If there was such a thing as "optimum" barrel length for a middy it would be 16" so the geometry would then be the same as a rifle length system

Unless you just don't like your 18" I would leave it alone, If you do want something shorter just sell the one you have and get a PSA or Spikes 16" middy upper

Spikes 16" middy upper is superb, all mill spec..

Hell, I have a 14.5" mid length and it runs great with any ammo I put through it.

As far as velocity........this is my under 150yrd shooter so I doubt it matter that much.

16" barrel and mid-length gas isn't mil-spec. Just saying.

if 17" is the optimal length for a mid length I am pretty sure manufacturer's would be selling them!

Just buy a new upper...lets say 14.5 or 16 inch...Hell just buy a new rifle!

It's built to military specification as far as material goes. To describe a Mil-Spec front sight, is to say that it is forged and a taller “F” to be barreled to a flattop and the shorter to be barreled to an A2 upper.
To describe a Mil-Spec M4 profile barrel, is to say that it is 4150, chrome lined, and 1/7 twist. Or even to say regarding chrome molly/chrome lined vs. chrome molly, where chrome lining is Mil-Spec. Smart ass

I just had my Stag 2T 16" cut down, and Noveske KX3 permently installed. Works great so far, and is still plenty accurate.

what did you cut the barrel to? can you go to 13.0 with the KX3?

Yeah. It's about 13. The KX3 is 3.25. The overall length is just a touch ( Maybe an 1/8 ) over 16" I'm way happy I did it. I have my 10" Troy rail going back to Troy because it is slightly out of spec. I am going to see if they will replace it with the 12" Version (MRF-R ) I wish I could find a pic of a barrel with a total length of 16" with a 12" rail on it.

correct me if I'm wrong but it doesn't mater what size the barrel is. Its the size of the gas port that maters

I would just leave it or go 16.  The only time I see anyone going 17 from an 18 is with a rifle gas system.
