[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Pre-Ban Colt identification

I often see Colt new (or slightly used) in the box at gun shows. Is there any definite way to determine if the Colt is pre-ban just from the markings on the box or any general rule about the serial number?

If it says Sporter, it's preban (except for the new Sporter M4). If it says match target, it is post ban. If it says AR15 and has an SP1 receiver, definitely preban. Anything with an SP1 style receiver is preban.
