I am going to start putting parts together to build one for my 15 year old if he continues to do well in school.  What do you think of a spikes lower to start with??  I am also thinking of a 16 inch chrome lined, from who  no idea and a adjustable stock.  What is the benefit of a M4 type or is there??  ANy other suggestions would be help[ful.  I know nothing about AR even though I have an olympics arms.

I am relatively new to ARs - but not to rifles. I have a Spikes AR and it seems to be good. I did have an issue with the upper, but they took care of it very quickly. Companies prove themselves to me when they respond well to the inevitable hiccups. I haven't gotten a chance to shoot it since getting it back, but I am confident that it will be right or they will make it right based on what I've heard from others and my own initial dealings.

Do you intend to scope this rifle for your son or let him shoot irons? It might be a good time to teach him some proper rifle marksmanship fundamentals and how to shoot with iron sights. I would recommend getting a good A2 style rear sight (either detachable carry handle/tactical rear sight that LMT makes/ or even the Matech BUIS). Any of those sights will have windage and elevation adjustments. I see a lot of parents put the magpul BUIS on rifles for kids, and there is nothing wrong with those, but IMHO they are only really good as a back up and not as a primary rear sight. They don't have an elevation adjustment.

If you do plan on letting him shoot iron sights, you might consider either a 16 inch mid-length gas system or maybe even a 20 inch barrel. I would stay away from the carbine length gas system in favor of a longer sight radius. This is all moot if you intend to scope the rifle.

You might consider checking out Palmetto State Armory, they have a plethora of options at good prices and you could build your son whatever you wanted and stay within budget.

One other consideration, you might check into Project Appleseed (http://www.appleseedinfo.org). They offer weekend rifle instruction paired with American history that teaches the same core principals that the Marine Corps teaches as far as marksmanship goes (use of a sling as a shooting support/prone/sitting/offhand positions/etc). It is family friendly and a lot of fun.

Good shooting

Lowers ( for the most part ) are lowers.  Go with the roll mark you like best.  Stocks are a personal choice, Magpul makes some great stocks such as the CTR or PRS.  The stock will need to be the same as the buffer tube either milspec or commercial NO MIXING.  You will need a buffer and spring.  I like the spikes ST-T2 buffer.  You will need a lower parts kit such as  DD or Spikes some say PSA make a good one.  I strongly recommend a Geissele trigger!!!  What type of shooting will you do.  This will help determine your upper.  You can add an aftermarket grip.  You may want to put on a end plate with sling loops.  Depends on money and what you want out of the rifle.

Basic M4 (PSA has some good prices) maybe with MAGPUL OEM stock and foreend.  Nice start that he can customize later.
