I'm thinking about getting an AR but can't decide weather I want a 14.5"/14.7" middy, 16" middy, or a 20" A4. I currently don't have an AR. It would be a general purpose gun. I prefer 1/7 twist, and CHF if possible, I'll either get it from BCM, PSA, or possibly DD

BCM 14.5" LW Middy...

Just put your name on the list and wait for the email saying they are back in stock.

Are you willing to pin your muzzle device or pay for a tax stamp?

If not go with a 16", in my opinion 20" is too long for a general purpose rifle.

For general purpose im goin with 16" middy. keeps your options open where a 14.5 gets pinned and limits a lot of possibilities.

I'm confused.
You want help in choosing your next AR but you don't have one?

I had thought about getting an SBR stamp, but the 16" would be a lot less hassle.

If you only have one AR it should be a 20"

Why not try an 18" rifle length gas system with 1/8 twist that should cover any need you may have (3 gun, home defense, plinker, etc...).

I like my Sabre Defense 18'' mid length the best for an all around GP rifle.

My Colt's are my favorites...

For only one general purpose gun, it should probably be in the 16" range (includes the pinned to 16" guns).  It will do most of what most users want/need in a more compact package.

I just bought a Spikes/GMP Dissipator upper (16" barrel, mid-length gas system, rifle length A2 front sight.)

Couldn't be happier with it.

14.5 ltwt middy with a vortex only rifle i've handled in a while that made me really wish i had one

16 ltwt middy if your one of those people who like to swap muzzle devices a lot.........

For your one and only AR, I'd go with a 16" lightweight midlength. That being said, my favourite AR is my BCM 14.5 LW midlength . I have a 20" too,  but it serves a different purpose than a general, do-it-all rifle.  You're interest in LW rifles leads me to believe that's what your looking for.

I plan to build more AR's so what ever I don't build now I will build later, but I can only afford one right now. I'm not the type that changes muzzle devices every week, but would like to be able to take them off if I needed to repair something. So I would probably make it an SBR if I went the 14.5" or 14.7" route. Is there really that much difference in performance and handling with the 14.5'' and the 16''?

The 14.5" will be slightly lighter and obviously shorter...The ballistics wont change enough to really notice.

If your going to go SBR I would go with a 12.5" and make it worth the extra cost of the stamp.

My latest build was a BCM 14.4 LW, mid, shaved FSB, under a rainier arms evolution rail, on a C3 billet lower.  I went with the UBR to start with, but I may swap into a standard mil spec MOE on it.

None of the above.

If not an SBR - 14.5" carbine.

Midlength has no place on barrels shorter than 16" IMHO.

This.

especially as you currently do not have an AR...the 16 in will be a good starting point.

16" middy, like a 14.5" carbine but better.

A4

It's the only one you won't be tempted to modify or get rid of... and you'll always enjoy shooting it.
Everything is right with the A4 - nothing wrong with it at all.

Go with the 20".  bigger is better right? (i own a 16" so what do i know...)

If you don't have an AR, 16" middy is where it's at. That barrel length will be the most versatile.

I've narrowed it down to the 16" middy and the A4, decisions

14.5. Drilled, pinned, and welded.

between the two... 16" middy

for your only AR it's much more versatile than the A4

go with a recce style... 1-4x optics, grip pod or QD bipod and grip/afg, UBR or SOPMOD, extended free float rail, low profile gas block...

it will be full of win

16" midlength with a rifle length free float forend. Nothing sucks more than learning to shoot iron sights with a carbine length sight radius.

Plus the added rail space will allow you to snap on more tactical rail covers than a carbine or midlength would.
