I have a Bushmaster XM15 with the A3 upper.  I bought it about 3 years ago intending on turning it into a project gun and doing a couple upgrades at a time.  Needless to say, I am finally getting around to starting it.  Are there any suggestions on what I should upgrade in the weapon first?  I'm not trying to go super high dollar but, I do want to put decent stuff that will hold up on the weapon.  Thanks for any info you can give.

Hi and welcome aboard !

Why not a free floating handguard ? I did it to my M4-type carbine and it's a joy to see group size reducing of nearly 30% at 100 meters

Thanks I was thinking about that but, I just wasn't sure how much was involved in the installation of it.  Also I was reading in a prior topic on here that some people suggest changing out the BCG....any thoughts on that?

You will have to remove your front sight base & barrel nut to install a free floating handguard. It require some tools but it's an easy & straightforward job...you will always have Arfcom if you need help

A high quality bcg is always a must...such as a zero fail bcg but I am sure that some more knowledgeable people here will better advice you about "the best" to buy. I have installed a FA bcg from bushmaster five years ago and 2000 rounds later, I have no complaint about it even if I think I will soon buy a new bolt, "just in case".

What does your Bushy not do that you want it to do?  That will drive your decision on what upgrades you need.

Lol well it goes boom when you pull the trigger....thats the big one lol so I'm happy with that.  I just wanna get some optics and a forarm with rails and other assorted accessories.  But anything I can do to make it better I'm up for.

I was looking at a few different optics one being a aimpoint the other a eotech and a cheap red dot made by vortex tactical.  I don't know that much about vortex, has anyone had one of thier red dots before? if so how did you like it or would your recommend it to others?

The one thing I do want to do is, to some how take the front sight  post off and get a different gas block so it is flat top all the way.  And then of course use the flip up sights.  However this looks pretty well involved.  Does anyone know of any videos that are online that show how to do this?

May I ask why you want to do this?  The pinned FSB is the most secure method of attachment.  Different types of set-screw and clamp-on gas blocks are well known for moving and causing cycling problems.  One way of going low-pro is called "shaving" your FSB

As far as rail options, what are you wanting to mount?  I know rails are cool and all but If you're just mounting a light and vfg, Magpul's MOE handguards are a great, economical option.  I speak from experience when I say that you can waste a lot of money really fast only to find certain gear doesn't work for you or you don't like it.  Take the time to really evaluate what you want your weapon to do (HD/SD, competition, long range, etc.) and then look for gear that will fit that role.
