Why would my brass deflector be getting pounded by every round? I know that's what it's for, & I don't mind if it's banged up, but curious if it is a sign to an underlying problem. Thanks.

there is no problem with your gun as long as the brass is clearing the it.

That's kind of its job, to deflect brass away from the rifle and the shooter.
If you are using steel cased ammo or weaker brass cased ammo sometimes it slows down the action so much it ejects the round differently than 5.56 ammunition.

If it really bothers you put a piece of Velco on the deflector.

Emphasis in red, you are worrying about it unnecessarily.

It's not just a catchy name, it's what it does. I have seen people use electrical tape if it really bothers you.
