Are you in a state that requires you to have a muzzle brake, or nothing? And pinned? I remember reading somewhere that NJ was like that.

But there are some compensators thats have flash hiding capabilities, and marketed as so, so those won't exactly be legal. Like the BattleComp, Griffin, KAC TT, PWS FSC556 & etc.

Muzzle brakes:
-Cav Comp
-YHM Phantom MB
-Armalite Recoil Check 2port
-DPMS Miculek
-Rainier Mini Comp
-Smith muzzle brake
-PWS DNTC
-AAC shorty
-PRI MSTN QC
-JP Comp
-PWS TTO
-AAC MB
-Surefire MB556K

I think NJ is pinned.

I'd like to see someone report on this one that's being sold on the EE.
The guy says it even pulls the rifle forward a bit.

yeah here in the wonderful state of jersey we have to have it pinned

I used to live in NJ, if the ATF has ruled it a muzzle brake, generally you'll be okay there.

I've seen quite a few battle comps on NJ owned rifles.

I had a miculek style comp on my Colt MT6400C when I lived there. It worked well, was cheap, but loud.

depending on where you're shooting, you'll probably get grief from someone, my FIL has a Stag 20" upper with a MB pinned/welded and he was told he couldn't have any muzzle device in NJ at his local range by an ignorant local LEO.

gun ownership in NJ is a clusterfuck.

Armalite brake is $30 ($15 when on sale!) and works great.  Loud like any other brake, two port, short, correct color.

I didn't know NJ even allowed you to have pictures of guns .  I have a miculek comp, loud but it does the job.

EE is the "Equipment Exchange" here on the forum. Upper right hand corner on your screen- you should see a button that says "Equipment Exchange." Click it. That is how items are bought, sold and traded here on the forum. Geri @ Cope's

If you go to the EE and search the words "a few" you should find the thread. That's what I did.

I think the guys name is "sniperhandle"

Looks like he has sold a few of these. I don't have a need for a brake right now, but I've thought
about just buying one to have for later.

I don't think you'll have too many friends on either side of you at the range with that thing on
the end of your rifle.

During the federal AWB I bought an AK74 style brake from bushmaster and had it welded onto a barrel. It worked very well and at least from the shooters prospective did not increase shooting noise levels.

One brake to stay away from is the Mini Y comp from bushmaster, even if someone were to try and give you one

I run the Miculek on mine.. (I shoot in NJ mostly) and its pinned/welded.. CTD has them for $29  #ARR-535

its loud on the L/R side.. but I'm behind it and I shoot outdoors with about 20 foot between the tables/benchs..

most swear by the Battle Comp or the PWS556 (or something like that).. maybe the DynaComp by Spikes..

a BRAKE is good for NJ.. Flash Hiders that you can get your pinky into the tip of.. not so good.. (quote from some other forum)

for NJ you just have to make sure you PIN/Weld it..

heres a sample of how I usually do my own.. YMMV..

I haven't had the chance to try them yet, but I recently got these two.  I got them primarily because they look the closest to a regular A2 flash-hider, but they also have gotten good reviews from what I have been able to find on them.  Also, if you ask them, both companies can send you letters from the ATF stating that these are compensators only, and NOT flash-hiders.

First: EGW Gen 2 Muzzle Brake

next: Carlson Mini Comp  This one can be found at Brownells.

The Carlson is not legal in NY, I doubt it's legal in Jersey. The open front end makes it look like a flash suppressor.

The EGW I had peeled away at the front after a few hundred rounds. Had to cut it off and have a new brake installed. It looked like they welded a washer into an A2.

Neither of those are worth anything anyway. If you are going to use a brake get one that works. Battle Comp, FSC556, DynaComp, Miculek, STAG (similar to Miculek but cheaper), RRA Tac Brake

I guess the laws are different in NY than in Mass. as far as ban compliance goes - The Carlson is classified as a comp. by BATFE, so that makes it OK here.

Maybe EGW changed their manufacturing methods since you had one, because mine looks like it has been machined from one piece - nothing like a welded up A2.

You may be right as I am not aware of MA laws. Just FYI the A2 birdcage is considered a compensator by the military and was not legal during the federal ban on post ban rifles. A brake is closed in the front like the EGW and it forces gasses out the sides. But you would know what is legal in your state not me.

I hope EGW changed.

The ATF ruled the PWS fsc556 as a "comp" and not a flash hider. It even comes with a copy of the letter. If I was in your shoes I would get that. I'm not in your shoes and I wish I would have got the PWS instead of the battle comp.

What didn't you like about the Battle Comp? I had one but sold it to a buddy that needed it, never got to shoot mine and was on the fence about replacing it. JUst trying to get some feedback on it.

ETA: The FSC556 works very well, I have them on two rifles and like them a lot.

I'm using that particular muzzle brake on my SIG 556 swat rifle and it does work almost as effective as the Miculek compensator IMHO.  I purchased mine directly from the manufacturer through Ebay at least a year or two ago when it was about $30.  It is a bit heavy and of course loud, but I do like the locking collet ring built into it so no need for lock or peel washers.  I can't say that it "pulls the rifle forward" when I use it though.

The battle comp helps...but isn't as effective as a PWS IMO. I have shot both side by side (gun with the pws was actually lighter also) and the PWS felt a lot better. The noise from the sides is a little worse on the PWS, but it isn't that much different honestly. Both kick up a lot of dust when shooting urban prone.... Both are pretty loud on SBRs also.... On a 16'' they don't seem much different noise wise, but the PWS compensates better.

Thanks good info. I may not buy another one. I do have a Spikes DynaComp, and the new Ranier I still need to try.

I'm may try the rainier on my ipda gun soon and see how it does. You really can't argue with the price. If I register a lower for an SBR I'll throw the BC on my 14.5 so it doesnt go to waste. If the bc was  $100 or less I think it would be worth it. I believe your paying $100 for the comp and $50 for the hype.

How do you like the dynacomp so far?

Didn't get a chance to try it yet. In NY so I only have two rifles i can swap brakes onto the others are welded. I have to try the Ranier first since my buddy wants one of those.

The rainier throws a nice fireball. The BC claims to reduce flash like an a2....bullshit.... Middle of the day there is visible flame and sparks shoot out. Idk I'm still a little pissed I bought the BC. I was going to get a PWS, but the internet told me the BC would make me not be able to miss and get me laid so I tried it.
