Turns out my local Bass Pro Shop has Smith & Wesson M&P-15's for $999.

With military discount, that comes to $949.  Add in 2 gift cards and the price is $799.  Then throw in the $100 mail-in military rebate, so total cost is $699.  Is this a good deal?

I'm looking for a "bare-bones" M4-type.  I can get a local M&P Sport for $689, but no military rebate on that model.  For the extra $100, is the chrome-barrel, FA and dust cover worth it?

Edit/added:
Or I could get a S&W lower for $349 ... aka $249 w/ gift card.

Then buy an upper from someone.  I like the PSA prices, but they're still a bit new for me to jump on the bandwagon.  But fiscally, I'm back at around $650.  And no rebate with that setup.

New edit:
So I can get that lower like I said for $249. Maybe grab the Model 1H from Stag Arms for $500.  Would that be a quality set-up?  It's a bit more expensive than, say, PSA, but at least they're in stock ...

Yes to the chrome barrel and dust cover. FA is useless in my mind. With the gift cards and rebate that isn't a bad price. I'd personally buy some fishing tackle and build my own, but the S&W will serve you well if you're just looking for a no frills setup.

Yes, that's a real good deal for a good AR over the Sport.

i would tell you to look elsewhere. that is mighty expensive for an AR right now. the AR market is very weak and you can have a quality upper and lower for at or under 600 bucks.

example is the FN barreled upper from PSA for 429 or something close to that, get a lower for 80 bucks, parts kit for 45 and stock kit for 90(thats a magpul kit, you can get standard 6 pos cheaper) and you will still have your gift cards to buy ammo with.

thats just me though.

remember you pay a 30% excise tax(on top of the sales tax you will pay too) for buying a pre assembled rifle. there is no reason to buy a built rifle when quality parts are so cheap, and lowers are so easy to put together.

The FET is 11%. Not 30%.

I think I would rather spend the money on a Spike's middy or a Colt 6920.

Buy the AR somewhere else, use the gift cards for targets, cleaning stuff, and ammo.

Well if I was going to blow twice the money, I'd agree.  But they don't carry either.

I was about to freak when I saw 30% too.  11% is what I thought it was.  Still another $60 on top of it though.

When I was first getting into AR's I needed to have a handguard put on my first one. I took it to Bass Pro not knowing that the didn't touch them at the time. Well when I get up to the counter and open up my case, the guy behind the counter looked at me like a fucking idiot and told me "we don't touch assault rifles here".

That was almost 5 years ago and I haven't been back since. Much better places to buy a rifle than from those hypocritical assholes.
