I have 3 guns on carbine gas and rifle extension/buffer. All three are ultimately reliable.

My carbine is setup with an A1 stock and I LOVE it! Best thing I've done and stone cold reliable.

As others have said, the buffer and spring go with the stock. It doesn't matter what gas system you use. Carbine buffer/spring go in a carbine tube. Rifle buffer/spring go in a rifle tube.
NEVER try to use a carbine buffer in an A1/A2 buffer tube!!! It will damage your rifle! At least that is my non-expert understanding of the situation :) |

Bushmaster A2 lower with A2 carbine upper {16" patrolmans bbl / no bayo lug or FH}:
This was my set-up back during the ban (pic is from late 1998 IIRC). I also had the 20" Hbar upper that came with the lower. . |

I don't own the upper anymore. And the stock is an M16 stock, but you get the idea.
This one was a hoot to shoot, and ran like a top. |

Unissued M16A1 stock, tube, buffer and spring on a 16" middy carbine. Runs perfect.

As others have noted, use the appropriate spring/buffer for the extension being used. In my case, I like the A1 length vs. the A2. Perfectly dependable with a 14.5 Colt bbl with non-permanent Vortex FH and carbine gas system.

Be careful to NEVER run a carbine buffer in a rifle buffer tube. With the shorter buffer, the carrier gas key will travel too far back and slam into the threaded ring of the lower receiver eventually breaking the lower receiver.

They were common on carbines during the ban.
They work fine. If you're looking for something with good cheek weld, there are collapsible stocks that accomplish the same thing. Magpul, LMT sopmod and Vltor come to mind |
