I just purchased a new DPMS AP4.  It's chambered for 5.56 and can obviously take .223 as well.  The question I have is because it's actually chambered for 5.56 do I need to use that ammo to break in the barrel or can I use .223?  This is not a "how do I break in the barrel" question, just what ammo to use initially.  I'll be running .223 through it primarily moving forward.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Use whatever works in the gun, shouldn't matter.

Some people recommend you break in the gun with 500 rounds of full pressure 5.56 to get everything settled. I broke in my last gun with Silver Bear and it's been great.

Just shoot whatever you want.

Run American made ammo, .223 or 5.56 and you will be fine.

Just remember to lubricate the rifle before shooting; they are shipped dry from the factory.

Yeah, good rule of thumb for any new firearm... Clean off any of the dry lube or preservative stuff that's inside, relube with a quality weapons lube of your choice (SLIP2000, CLP, Gunzilla, Weaponshield, etc.) before shooting.

Thanks for the advice and it was in the plan.  I'll be using 725 cleaner and Slip2000 and it'll go through a thourough cleaning prior to first shot and I'll be putting Federal American Eagle 223 Remington 55 Grain FMJ through it.  I really appreciate the quick feedback and advice...you guys rock!

Congratulations on the new rifle! As far as breaking mine in, I just buy a couple of boxes of XM193 and commence to pulling the trigger.

I broke mine in with quality .223 and it fine I don't think I would really worry about it.
