If you were to put a chrome lined 20" barreled rifle ( namely a STAG#4 ) in a machine rest, what type of accuracy / group size would be expected @100yds? I ask this as because I was getting AVERAGE 1.55" groups at this range w/several of my hand-loads w/2 loads just under/over 1.0" Now granted, winds were basically slack @about 75 degrees and I used very good quality components for these rounds but I DID NOT expect these results.
I have read threads on this site and others that chrome lined barrels are less accurate, SO, did I get an upper that was built on Wednesday or did I just happen on  loads this tube really likes?

EDIT: 5 round groups, 1minute or more between shots, VERY stable rest, Nikon M-223 2-8pwr Nikoplex reticule scope and mount

Assuming your groups involve more than two rounds, you seem to have a good barrel

Sound like you have found a decent load and are doing your part behind the trigger.

FWIW military ball ammo is not noted for its gilt edge accuracy.

About chrome bores.

The old method of taking a barrel made oversize and plating it ( hopefully) to size has been obsolete for a couple decades now.

The modern method begins with a barrel of standard bore and groove.

In a precisely controlled process, two ten-thousandths of an inch are electo chemically removed from the bore and four  ten-thousandths from the chamber.
The bore and chamber are micro etched and then removed steel is replaced with hard chrome and ectro polished.

You are left with a rifle barrel far smoother, far more dimensionally consistent, of far greater accuracy potential than the old method could provide.

That is only used for belt fed machine guns anymore.

Your group size is typical for a barrel of that type.

Chromed bore = fighting
Stainless = precision

Stag Model 4 barrels are not chrome lined. A chrome lined barrel will shoot the way you describe, however.

It's hard to extrapolate experience with three different chrome bores into something of a rule.  I had a 1986ish Colt HBAR that would shoot consistent goups that were well under MOA, about 1/2 inch on a sandbag rest.  If the group got large, it was me, not the rifle.  My other rifle was an Eagle Arms from about 1998.  If I got 3-4 inches at 100 yards I was lucky.  My last example is an Armalite SPR Mod 1 Midlength, and using a Nikon M-223 1-4x scope, it will easily shoot under MOA.

Seems to me that you pays your money and you takes you chances on how any given barrel is going to shoot.  Looks like you got a good one.

At 100 yds out my Colt SOCOM barrel and an M4S Aimpoint my groups average 2 to 2.5 inches and thats benched they get a bit bigger offhand at 50 yds but thats plenty accurate for a chromelined combat barrel..

Not to highjack this thread but how does a melonite barrel compare?

Fixed it for you.
