I'm at the point where I would like to get a solid set up for sighting in optics on my AR and possibly other rifles as well. My biggest concern is having a stable platform that removes human error from the process. In the past I've used makeshift front rests such as my range bag or sighted in front the bench with sling tight hold on the rifle, but have never felt that this gies me a truly precise sight in. I'm willing to spend about $150.
What are the merits of a full rest like the lead sled as opposed to just using a rear bag and front rest like the Caldwell Rock? What kind of set ups do you guys use that accommodate up to a 20 round mag? Any one here have experience with the Lead Sled Solo, which looks to be designed with AR's in mind? Any other input is appreciated. Thanks. YP |

The Lead Sled will put you close but your body does not react that way so your point of impact will change once your body is absorbing the recoil. And if you've got poor technique, the Lead Sled won't solve that either. Get a bipod and have someone help you with technique (although their technique may not work the best for you). If you don't want to deal with learning to shoot with a bipod, then I would suggest a bull bag. I've seen very novice shooters do extremely well shooting from them. They're an even a better solution than a crappy rest like a Caldwell.
You can't eliminate the human factor because the human factor is a large component of great shooting. It's a fallacy that a machine rest (not one that many can afford) can tell you more about a guns capability than someone who can flat out shoot. |

Sand bags in front. Small sand bag made from a shirt sleave in the rear helps alot.
If my 308 is punching one hole 5 round groups 5 different papers. I would say it works, or my tecnique is consistently bad in the same spot. my ar has a red dot so its not a one hole puncher. Be aware i have see a wood stock weatherby 300 stock break in a lead sled. Stock take all the recoil not your shoulder, well it gave. AR should be ok alot less recoil, and the buffers takes most of that. |
