Had my first real failure in my AR yesterday, a stuck case in my chamber.

Wondering if it was the round or the gun.

I have a BCM 16" Midlength on a Spike's Lower.

The round in question is .223 55 gr. steel cased Monarch, which came after 40 rounds of .223 55gr. Wolf. The rifle has bulldozed past near 1000 rounds on 62gr Silver Bear and over 500 rounds of various bronze without hiccup.

It was also cleaned and lubed prior to the range trip.

Opinions?

Avoid monarch in the future.

It happens.

Not sure how best to answer this.  No weapon platform is going to run 100% all the time, and too many things could factor in.

Magazine? Steel Case? Bent/cracked casing? Could be any number of things that caused this.

If that is your first malfunction in over a thousand rounds you are doing fine.  If it starts happening more, take the steps to narrow down what could be causing the problem and go from there.

And I'm guessing it was lacquer coated ??

I avoid shooting steel out of mine but the ones i have shot in the past were polymer coated and had no problems.

In before the OHMYGODYOUSHOTSTEELCASEINANAR15BLABLABLA   crowd gets here

Steel cased is fine, but I highly reccomend that you stick with Wolf WPA in the future, this is what I shoot 95% of the time with zero problems.

Steel-cased ammo is fine but be ready for what happens when you buy cheap ammo. If you asked Paul at BCM he wouldn't say it was a weapon problem he'd say it was an ammo problem. I'd have to agree with him. Stick with steel-cased ammo that you've tested and works (looks like Silver Bear) or purchase cheap brass ammo and consider reloading in the future.

That or do what I'm doing next month and pick up a .22LR lol

If you want to shoot steel cased ammo without failure, buy Silver Bear.  The painted/coated stuff will stick in some weapons, especially when they get hot.  I see this failure at least once in every carbine course I attend.

Coated steel doesn't stick anymore than any other steel cased ammo. The laquer coat causing steel to stick when it's hot is a myth. Some steel cased ammo sticks more than brass because of the dirtiness of the powder & the fact that steel doesn't expand & contract quite like brass cased ammo.

1) "Lacquer" is not the problem.

2) So one stuck case in 1,000 rounds is enough to avoid the ammo? How much money would you save by punching out that ONE stuck case over buying more expensive ammo for plinking?

OP: The simple answer is that sometimes "shit happens". Getting the odd stuck case here and there is just par for the course when you shoot steel ammo it seems.

Was the rim on the case ripped off or damaged?  Did you have to use a cleaning rod to tap it out or were you able to clear the chamber by pulling the charging handle? Are their any other problems with the case that you removed? split neck odd sized etc

I am trying to get a better idea on what failed

Yeah, I guess shit just happens. It's just with the hype with BCM around here, I was expecting it to happen much later down the line.

As for more information:

30 rd Pmag

Neck intact

Tapped out using hammer and rod

Ran 60 rounds of PMC 62gr brass and 40 rounds of the 55gr. steel Monarch right after tapping it out and lubing the BCG. My friend who was shooting beside me ran into a stuck case and a failure to fire using Monarch.

Beginning to think it was just a crappy batch of Monarch.

when you cleaned it did you really get in there with the chamber brush

i get casing stuck in chamber alot with steel .. done alot of reading and everyone seem to eventually point to the fact that steel case does not expand and gives room for powder to get dirty between the chamber and case.

i like to shoot alot and save money using steel ammo.. but i am beginning to change to cheap brass for additional $20-40 for 500rounds.
