when i look at full rifles or assembled uppers they all have "permanent" or "welded" flash hiders on them for ATF but when i see ppl on youtube assembling there uppers or swamping there barrels they just unscrew the flash hider.

so whats up do they need to be welded or can they just be screwed on.

Depends on the length of the barrel. If the barrel is less than 16", say 14.5" (without the FH), an extended FH has to be permanently attached to bring it up to the legal length of 16", otherwise you have a short barreled rifle subject to the registration requirements of the National Firearms Act. A permanently attached FH is considered part of the barrel. If the barrel itself is 16" or longer (without the FH), no need to permanently attach.
