Hey guys, first post here and planning on buying my first AR in a couple weeks and just wanted a little advice. Been looking at the Stag arms model 1 for $770 but after hearing good things about PSA I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting there M4 CL 4140 upper for $400 and then shopping around for a lower to go with it. Since this is my first AR I plan on leaving it basic for a while until I decide what I really want/need. And while it's going to mostly be a plinker and range toy I still want something that's good quality and going to last. Also any other suggestions would be great!

You can build quality and save on the excise tax.

Look at Palmetto State Armory kits. Wait for a good sale on lowers. I just picked picked up a Spikes blemished lower for $80 out the door. You are looking at around $600 for a quality build.

I think it boils down to personal prefrence, but there are advantages to building.  You know how it works.  If something breaks, you will probably know how to fix it without getting on the internet first.

You will save on excise tax (and sales tax if you buy online)

You can get exactly what you want.

One advantage of buying, is possible higher resale value, and you know everything will fit together (although it should all fit if you build it, but parts can be out of spec).

I built my first rifle, and I have no regrets.

Thanks for the input, Yea I was thinking I'd like to build so I can know the rifle inside and out. I like the price on those kits also! but what about the rear sight on those, dosent look like they come with one? will any rear sight work on them? I Plan on shooting with the irons for a while and possible going to a red dot later on.

LOL I wish I did, that looks nice! But trying to keep it under $800 for the rifle cause I still need LOTS of ammo and a couple mags

I bought my first 2 ARs complete and built the last 12.  If I had it to do over again I would just buy a Colt 6920 and call it a day.

I still want a Colt.

Build it. If you prefer stag you could build that also.

Ok, so I'm going to build but which upper would ya'll suggest? I really don't have a preference because I've never used any of them. PSA, Stag, or any others? Thanks guys!

I would buy a compler kit from PSA for $479 and a stripped lower for $79.  Place on seperate orders to save the 11%surcharge.

I am actually looking to get my first AR too. I would like to build but I want a colt, so I'm not sure if I can buy a colt upper and lower separately?  OP let me know what you end up doing!

This ^
Or buy the stripped lower locally and avoid the FFL fee.

Yea I haven't seen any Colt uppers for sale from a dealer. My plan as of now is to get the PSA kit for $480 and the PSA stripped lower for $80 (different orders to avoid 11% tax on kit) unless the local gun shop has a stripped lower, I'll be calling them tomorrow to check. plus a rear carry handle sight for about $30 and a Pmag for $15 for a grand total of $605 + shipping and ffl on lower. So I'll be saving about $100 compared to the Stag I was looking at and can put that towards extra ammo! So did I miss anything or will I be good to go get some trigger time with this? Thanks again for the help guys

PSA is a hard deal to beat, probably better quality than most commercial AR's and cheaper.
