Looking at purchasing my first AR.  Long experience with hunting guns (Bolt rifles, shotguns of all types).  Leaning towards S&W since I have a M&P 15-22 and have been pleased.  can't afford Larue or other top tier choices at this time.

Thanks

I'm a Colt fan simply because my dad gave me his when I was 18.  It was the  I grew up shooting that rifle and since then I have added two more Colts to the collection and never looked back.  I also have the M&P15-22, which I set up to feel like one of my 6920's for cheaper plinking.

I've heard that the new crop of M&P 15s are pretty good, though.  You probably will love anything you get BUT if you want a Colt, some of the SP6920's have fallen below the $1000 mark (Bud's Gun Shop) and there are a few remaining LE6920's right around $1000

Save money! Build it yourself!

It's easy and you can afford top of the line parts if you build it yourself!

You can make an AR for 800 bucks that will be better then anything you can buy off of the shelf.

It won't make a difference.  You'll have a first AR then your second will have everything you truly want!  Welcome to the addiction, you'll love AR15.com

Sorry I forgot to say.  I'd recommend you buy exactly what your heart wants.  If price is an issue SAVE buy EXACTLY what you think you want.  Don't settle on crappy brands just because the one you want is a bit more expensive.

I have a LWRC, but some great brands are COLT, BCM (lots of fan boys on this site), Spikes, Daniels Defense, and a few others.  Try to stick with the main names they will do you right.

I just purchased a couple of months ago my first AR...a Smith & Wesson M&P 15OR and have been very pleased with it. I purchased this "OR" model "Optics Ready" because I was going to mount a ACOG style sight on it.

This is what I have modified/added to my rifle...

Bushnell Trophy 1x32mm MP Red Dot Sight
Magpul MOE Stock
Magpul MOE Grip
Magpul MOE Trigger Guard
Magpul MOE Hand Guard w/ 2 accessory rails
Magpul RVG...Rail Vertical Grip
Badger Ordnance Tactical Charging Handle Latch
Mako Group Polymer Ejection Port Cover

The M&P 15 is a nice entry level rifle for the money right out of the box.

I chose S&W based on their reputation and quality...I have several S&W handguns already.

The nice thing about AR rifles is you can customize them EXACTLY how YOU want.

Just try to customize it to how it will feel/function shooting and for how you plan on using it...not to go for what I've heard people on here call "Tacticool".

Good Luck!

Good man already recognizing Larue as top of the tier.  For a starter AR and price being somewhat of an issue, the M&P 15 is not a bad choice.  Check out Spikes tactical as well.  You can call them and customize at a fairly affordable level. I recommend getting something fairly basic that you can add to as you see fit.

What is your approx budget as this might help refine what you are looking for?

Looking to keep budget at $800-$1000 not including optics.

Uses will be plinking, possibly light hunting, and possibly competing in carbine matches at the local range.

For optics I am leaning towards Aimpoint.

spikes upper off aim surplus for 495$ with magpul handguards.  you can find assembled lower recievers for 150-250 or more depending on what you buy and what it comes with its up to you how fancy you want to go...or assemble it yourself from a stripped lower (its easy, takes an hour with no special tools).

i dunno how much the m+p costs but typing it in google shopping it looks like 900-1000 bucks and doesnt even come with a freefloat or anything fancy.  you can do better than that for less money.

I've had my M&P for going on 3 yers now. Its been flawless since the first shot.

Theres so many companies making excellent ar rifles nowdays its hard to choose one from the other. I got the M&P because my local shop had one for a good deal and I've been very happy with it.

Dont get stuck on just one brand though. Make sure you look around first. Bravo company and spikes tactical also make very good rifles at an excellent price.

My M&P:
