I currently have a Bushmaster 7.62x39 Carbine w/ 16" barrel and im looking to build a long range .223/5.56 upper so im looking for some suggestions or experience with building one. I was thinkiing a 20" barrel as i dont really seem to many options for the longer barrels. I was also considering the .338 Lapua Mag single shot bolt action upper, but the price of ammo is what has me second guessing this choice. Why is this ammo so freaking expensive, twice as expensive as a 50bmg which is crazy. Anyways, any suggestions for good quality match barrels or complete uppers please let me know

I haven't had a chance to stretch mine out yet but it's doing really well so far at 100 yards after only about 60-80 shots down the barrel.

stag arms model 6 upper. it has the 24" bull barrel with 1:8 twist and they guarantee 1/2 moa (not sure what range this is claimed for)

I don't think it's twice as expensive, I seem to see both for about $5/round or $100/box of 20, but the .338 is match or hunting loads while the .50 seems to be generic loads.

I offer up examples, both a little under $100/20 rounds:
.338, 20 rounds
.50, 10 rounds

But yeah, .338 Lapua Magnum is a hot ticket item and there is not a lot of it made, that's why it is expensive.

Since you already have a BM, why not go the Predator route?  I've read great reviews about the Predator with good shooters getting 1/4 MOA accuracy with match loads.

How about a 6.5 Grendel? You can get Wolf ammo or even good match grade stuff for a lot cheaper than .338 or .50. If you roll your own you can make your own brass out of 7.62x39 cases. The hotter loads with the right bullet can easily pass 1000 yds + supersonic from a 20" barrel.

Edit- Barrel life is MUCH MUCH better than .338 as well. Also, they fit in a standard .223 magwell.

bushmaster varminter 24 inch SS BB upper was the most accurate upper i owned, could shoot dimes at 100 yards all the time with handloads.

Define "long range"? That 16" barrel should be good to carry you to 6 or 800 yards. If you want to build a long barrel upper "just because" thats fine too though. Variety is good.

If it were me though I would go with a 20-22" 6.5 Grendel rather than a .223 upper.

ETA:

Disregard all that, didnt see the 7.62 part.

Plus, they will be on Commercial Row at Camp Perry, Ohio at the end of this month for the National Matches.  Their prices at the matches are much better than the site!  Definitely worth the trip!!!!

i already have a 7.62 so i really wanna go with the .223/5.56 due to how cheap it is it shoot them. I having beeing going back and forth between a few uppers.
1st choice- WOA 26" match barrel 1.8" twist SS
2nd choice- Rock River Arms 24" SS Varment bull barrel
3rd choice- Rock River Arms 20" SS Match barrel

Is there a real gain from a .223/5.56 barrel over 20"?

im not sure how much you gain if any with a 24 or 26 inch barrel but there seems to be alot of them out there.
I have a bushmaster v-match with a 20 inch barrel and 2 stage trigger that works like a champ plus its not to heavy or to long to drag out in the field when hunting coyotes or ground hogs.

The longer barrel does not increase accuracy, it increases velocity and keep the bullet supersonic for a longer distance.  Those 1/2MOA claims are for perfect conditions, match grade ammo$$$ and a very good shooter.

If you want accuracy out past 1k yards look at the 6.5G.  Wolf is working on steel case plinking ammo for the Grendel, suppose to come in at 25-30 cents a round.  When this happens I well be building a few 6.5 carbines to go with my 24" Overwatch.

I too have had a positive experience.  The complete rifle has a great trigger.
