I'm looking for a new upper to use at the range and occasionally in the field hunting varmints.  The hunting will be a VERY minor percentage of the use this rifle sees but is still an option out there.  Most will be at the 100-200 yard line, but a few times a month I'll have the ability to reach out to 600 yards.  I have no plans to hang a single item off a rail.  Maybe a sling swivel for a bipod at the most, and even that is a bit doubtful.  I would like a free float tube and one of the simple $50 plain jane round tubes would work great.  I'm thinking either an 18" or 20" barrel.  Don't want to go too much longer as it gets a bit long, but not really looking to get into a 16" either.  I'm not looking for a match quality barrel like a Kreiger or Pac-nor, but I'm not looking for the cheapest possible barrel either.  Wilson blanks seem to have potential if finished well, and I really like my WOA service rifle barrel, but that profile is a bit heavy for what I'm looking for.  I don't want chrome lined, this is a paper puncher mainly.

Who is putting out or will build an upper like this for reasonable money?  I see plenty who are offering setups that are close to what I'm looking for, but instead with $300+ rails that I have no interest on spending the money on or they are putting out an upper with standard handguards and no float tube, but I'm having trouble finding a quality build with all the parts I'm looking for.  I've started to think I should just build it myself from parts, but it seems if I can find it already preassembled it is potentially cheaper that route and comes all ready to go.  Thoughts?

I've looked at them, but if you don't want a 16" or shorter upper, or their long 24" upper, you are out of luck.

Check out PK Firearms.  They produce a huge variety of different uppers and if you don't see what you want, I bet they would put one together for you.  I've purchased a number of complete uppers from them and have been completely satisfied.  Two of my favorites are built with 18" Saber Defense fluted barrels.  One stainless and one CL-CrMV.  I think the only 18 inchers they have right now are the DD S2W models, but one of those in a YHM Smooth rail may be just what you are looking for.

Thats kinda funny,  i was looking for a new upper with no quad rails a barrel that doesnt look like a pencil for less than $500, found there name from a search here so i gave them a try, seems to be a good product, though i only have 500 rounds through it,  that happended the week after i ordered mine, cant say i can really blame the guy for trying to get some free advertising

Haven't shot it yet but the customer service at JSE Surplus was great.  My 18" upper just came in, I haven't shot it yet but the price was extremely reasonable and as I said, GREAT people to deal with.
