| i went to my friend and have been browsing on here and have kinda narrowed down my options. my friend who has built and bought complete rifles tol;d me my best option is a spikes middy but i have found real good deals on dpms or bushmaster and even rra complete rifles with plenty of upgrades. i know a lot of people say that newbs should work up but i am in the process of going patrol and would like a weapon to get used to and follow me into patrol. amy advise you cvould give would be great. p.s. my budget is about 1500 i also live dfw area so if anyone knows of good stores or deals in the are that would be great. |

I'd go with spikes or BCM for that price range. The middy is my favorite option as well. Yep. If you grab a 16" barrel, get a midlength system, do NOT get a carbine system. I have one, and I'm waiting to replace the barrel with a middy. Nonsense.... The Spikes is a good way to go....you were steered in the right direction. Also great advice on the Colt 6920 and BCM above. There is not a damn thing wrong with a carbine length gas system with a 16" barrel (a la Colt 6920). Many prefer a midlength gas system with a 16" barrel (have two myself) because it's "softer shooting" or "not over gassed", but it's mainly just the flavor of the week... Nothing wrong with the Bushmaster or RRA, but arguably a better rifle for the money in the Spikes. For $1500....Spikes or BCM gun + Larue Mount + Aimpoint + Surefire G2LED light = hell of a rig. Welcome!!! |

Welcome!!! I agree with the "Carbine = Nonsence" argument. And i run both systems. J |
| thanks for the response now would a 7" quad rail work for the middy? and i was looking at the st-15 mid and thanks for the options with the optics and tac light becasue that is what i want with a foregrip and/ or bi pod for a little better accuracy if i decide to go to 200-300 yd range which i think is totally possible. |

Middy AR's have the FSB at 9". You would need a 9" rail system if you decide to use a FSB. It's the shortest you can go with a FSB. You should have no problem hitting man sized targets at 200-300yds with a non free floated rail using some good ammo and of course, doing your part. Best of luck!! J |

is it true you can shoot 5.56 and .223 through a 5.56 but not a 5.56 througha .223? Yes. Quoted:
once again a new lingo is fairly new to me what is fsb?could i use a full 12" and still look good especially with a a2 front site Front sight base. Most FSB's are also the gas block, so it would be at either the 7" location in a carbine, or a 9" location in a midlength. You could also forgo the FSB, get a low profile gas block, and get as long of rail as you want that fits over the low profile gas block. |

OP there is nothing wrong with a carbine gas system, if nothing else the military proves that.
the middy is a new fad here on arfcom. a year ago everyone was suggesting carbines, now its middies, but the diff between the 2 is so slight that i have yet to see proof of it actually existing. |
