I'm talking about where the take down and pivot pins are inserted.

Those two little holes on the front of the lower receiver where the pivot pin inserts and the
two holes at the lower front and back of the upper receiver where the pins insert.

Has anyone ever seen one break?

I've noticed some of my Colts are cut off center and a little thin on one side.
Looking at pictures on the internet, this seems to be normal.

I've watched Marine Corp and Army bayonet practice on TV and that seems to be a
lot of stress on those areas of the receivers.

How often do they break?

I've never heard of one breaking?

it happens rarely.. and usually because of a manufacturing defect or user error/abuse.

it is not really a stress point at all. maybe during bayonet drills or something it would be a stress point yes, but in normal use.. no.

Even during bayonet drills the rifle doesn't take that much abuse, I'd never seen one break under military use, even combat.

Every rifle I've seen Kaboom, or break in any way have always been civilian guns and either because of poor quality parts or materials.

It shouldn't break unless from KB. Otherwise, in terms of normal use, your wrist will break long before enough force is exerted on the pivot pin holes to damage them.

Cast lowers from the early to mid 90's will break.

I've seen lowers break the ears off when people install the trigger guard, and I saw an upper break from someone installing a muzzle device using an upper vice, and not a barrel vice.  They are pretty tough.

I asked a similar question to a classmate of mine, who was a Ranger, and he spoke of an instructor who buttstroked a picnic table to splinters with an M16. YMMV
