I bought a 10.5" upper off the EE from a member that is brand new for a good price.  I took off the factory handguards to install my VTAC 9" rail and noticed it had some scratches on the barrel finish.  Is there something I can do for the finish?  The metal is showing and I don't want it to start rusting since I won't be able to see the condition of the metal underneath my rail.  It looks like maybe the handguards were removed by the previous owner and somehow it was scratched.  The metal is shiny.

You could hit it with some Cold Blue. Clean that right up.

Didnt think of that.  It adds character but I don't my upper rusting away and not know it.  I think my dad has some I will give that a try.  Will it match the LMT finish?

After you cold blue it make sure to coat it heavily with oil. Let it soak for a while then pat it don't rub it off you want it on there.

Also look at the Birchwood Casey Flat Black Pen - every AR owner needs one of these for touching up spots here and there.

Handguards as in aluminum heatshield lined? May be just aluminum on the surface and not the barrel steel that you are seeing as shiny.

Go to auto parts store and get a rattle can of high heat ceramic flat black exhaust header paint.  That stuff is good for 1200F.  Tough and blends the scratches nicely.

Yes they are aluminum lined heat shields.  It looked more like scratches to me but I guess its possible since aluminum is weaker than steel.

Have you tried rubbing it real hard with CLP?
Many times those things come off.
