I guess maybe I should explain a little further....
I've learned a lot from you guys but I still have a long way to go. I had heard that Colt stamps their upper receivers as such but this isn't supposed to be a Colt upper. This is supposed to be an LMT upper but it isn't marked anywhere other than on the barrel. About an inch behind the barrel threads is stamped "5.56 Nato 1-9" and then the M4 stamp above the gas tube. I have had the handguards off looking for other markings but none are there. The FSB is F marked and has straight pins. The barrel is chromoly and not chrome lined. It's a carbine length gas system with a typical government profile 16" barrel. The M4 feedramps are just like the "good" pictures and the gas key screws are textbook staked. It has a standard phosphate coated BCG that has an R and R stamped on the side (not RR). It has standard carbine handguards as well. The lack of chrome doesn't bother me since this AR will never see a super high round count. There is nothing in LMT's website that even comes close to these specs. The important part is that the accuracy is far better than I expected out of one of these rifles. I'm used to my .223 TC Contender and my Model 70 bolt rifle being sub MOA capable but I wouldn't hesitate to use this AR for a groundhog at 125 yards. I'm happy with its reliability and accuracy. I just would like to know for sure where it came from. If anyone would know, you all would. Thanks in advance |

It may be a M&A upper that is built for them by LMT, but made to M&A's specs. |

That sounds right to me. When asked what brand the upper was, the gunsmith said his uppers are made by Lewis Machine. I suppose technically that would be true and in fairness to them, they didn't claim it was an LMT branded upper although that is how I took it

Every M4 I have ever seen has had an "M4" above the gastube hole. Every M16A4 I have ever seen has not had the "M4" marking. However, I didn't get the feeling that the OP was referring to mil uppers since he did not specifically refer to such, so I based my reply on commercial offerings. |

I think that only Colt does that. Maybe others can chime in and let you know who else does it, too. Colt isn't the only one who does it, but they're all definitely not marked with M4. Colt might not be the only one that does this ,but definitely all of there mil. m-4 uppers have this and all of the 6920's and 6921's that I have seen have this stamp,hope this helps ,as far as other manufacturers uppers I don't know. |

The barrel, FSB and BCG are not LMT. |
I have a Colt M4 upper that has a small stamped M4
I also have what I believe to be a Palmetto M4 upper that has a very nice milled M4 that is larger than the Colt's... 
I have a BCM marked upper and there isn't anything where the M4 should be stamped... 
I also have an LMT Daniel Defense upper and it is also devoid of any markings.... - Clint |
