I was looking at getting an afg for my AR. I was looking at them the other day at the local gun shop and the dude told me there wasn't a whole lot of point to get one for a carbine.
I have a carbine length MOE handguard.

I like the feel of them and think they look pretty sweet. Im not big on straight foregrips.

What you guys think?

Thanks!

If your rail is 7 inches or less i dont see the point of getting one. Its purpose is so you can extend your hand further on the hand guard and get a more "comfortable" feel.

Don't listen to the gun shop gun.  A lot of the AFG's I've seen are on carbines and the guys that use them seem to love them.  It doesn't work for me but that's just personal preference.

It's purpose is to replace the conventional VFG.....it's design creates a more natural grip for your hand and gives greater control of the bore.  Beer can grips on standard VFG's have shown to give less control of the weapon thus why they are beginning to be used more so as reference points.

If you like it and will use it get it.

I have mine of a 9" rail.  I think they work better on a longer rail, but it depends on your stock length and arm length too.

I have long arms and would like to have fine out even farther.  It call comes down to personal preference.

I like short VFG on SBRs, but like others have said, on rail longer than a typical carbine it feels much more comfortable to me.  At first I thought it was one of these "everyone does it and if you don't you are a an idiot and a noob" ideas that people push on here, but it made sense to me and I can personally maintain a more stable sight picture with it than with a VFG.  If you are unsure and don't want to spend money, see if you can find a friend who has one.

ETA:  I have not tried one on a carbine length rail, but if you don't like VFG, I say give it a try.

I'm a huge fan of the AFG––on 9" or longer rails.

I would not get one for a carbine MOE handguard.

That said, the AFG is designed for a specific shooting style, and it will not work well for someone who shoots differently.

These are the same guys that would buy Chris Costa's shit in a box if magpul sold it

This time the guy at the gun store is right, the AFG was designed for a support arm fully extended hold as taught by Magpul Dynamics. It's a version of a similar hold used by competition shooters for years.

While personal preference is a great catch phrase, it's not always right. I could prefer that my magazines curve towards me when inserted in the magwell, doesn't make it right and sure as hell doesn't allow the magazine to function as intended. Same goes for the AFG
