Hey Guys,
Been silently watching and reading while gaining my education on here. Thanks to the knowledge shared I decided to build my first AR rather than buy it pre built. I am struggling to get the moeny together for all my parts and so I am trying to keep it very reasonable. Please accept my stance on it and dont tell me to save up for a troy or something. I just dont have the moeny. Most of these rails can be had for 40-60 USD. My question is, If I am looking at buying a free float handguard and I was interested in lets say The following models: A Hogue FF Tube Model http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=435 DPMS FF Tube http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=1775 Or UTG ( I know god forbid. Relax it's my first entry level build I am struggle to get the money up to build this so understand My stance and dont tell me to save up.) Another Store My question reguarding them is: How do you tell what length you would need? Common sense tells me I need to beasure the barrel but, Geez , most manufacturers for even upper end tube dont seem to give accurate measurements. I would like to know how to tell what length FF Tube I need? Also any idea who made the barrel? I have an Barrel Marked *w8s I don't know who made it but the measurements are Barrel Diagram Overall length Extension to Mussle Crown 20 3/8" (I was told this was a RRA 20" wylde chamber) A = Extension length 1" Diameter at Designated point = 1.0 B = Exension collar to Sight Base 12 3/16" Diameter at Designated point = .950 up to .980 at at the shoulder prior to the extension collar SB = Sight Base 1 7/8" Diameter at Designated point = .750 C = SB to Crown 2 5/8" Diameter at Designated point = .740 D = Muzzle Crown Diameter at Designated point = .740 http://pictures.auctionarms.com/6229192702/10006350/102601004.jpg_thumbnail1.jpg?aa=20110129150222 |

If its a 20" barrel you would need rifle length( about 12" long) some tubes require a low profile gas block because they wont fit over the front sight. since the barrel nut is not on im guessing that Front sight has to come off anyway. Make sure you get one that works with a stock front sight |

I understand and thanks for the input. unfortunately most manufacturers expect us to be able to know through Osmosis as to wether these barrels will fit or not. Anyone got a definaite on any of the for ends mentioneds to wether or not they will fit ?
The Front sight base is debatable as to wether or not it stays. I can stick a gas block on it and dont really mind either way. However I see short, carbine, rifle and advanced length for a bunch of these is there a generic guideline ? |
| You have an older Rock River barrel based on your W8S code description. W-Wylde chamber, 8- 1:8 twist, S- Stainless. It's unusual to see a barrel like that without at least a handguard cap and a stripped barrel nut. Looks like someone removed those after it left the factory- no big deal though. |
