| I saw a picture of a Mexican Federale last night and his M-16 didn't have a brass deflector but did have the helper button to push it forward that last little bit (gagging on the correct term.) About what years would you see that generation/revision? I have an early 70's SP1 and it had neither, but my 80's AR's have both. |

Did it have an A1 rear sight (assuming it was a carry handle receiver)?
Some info here: Retro Black Rifle. |

This was the standard configuration for the Army from first adoption in 1964 until replacement by the M16A2 starting in 1984 or so. First called the XM16E1 and later the M16A1, it may have been the most common AR-15 configuration ever and millions were made. SP1's cannot be used reliably for reference to production eras, as Colt used them as a dumping ground for parts the DoD wouldn't buy. Forward assists and type 2 lower receivers were introduced in 1964 for the military, but SP1's were still being made without these features in 1982. |
