As I continue to ponder my first AR build or just purchase a AR factory complete I had a brain fart. I have to pay $50 FFL fee locally to get a lower shipped to me from any internet sponor/privit owner etc. So that $65-$90 lower now turn to $115-$140 which does not make much sense to me. I cannot find just the lowers at the local gun shops.

With that said I do like to shoot long distacne .22lr with my Savage Mark II. So If I would buy a AR15 style .22lr are the lowers the same as the say AR 5.56 lowers? OR are the .22lr lowers make to a lesser spec?

Kinda what i'm getting at I can get a say SW MP .22lr then just purchase some time down the road a used BCM/RRA/Spikes, etc upper and do my build from the same lower?

That way I have two firearms the 5.56 and a .22lr that would untilize the same lower.

It is my understanding they are the same. And find someone who won't rip you off for the transfer...$50.00 is robbery.

$50.00! Tell them to GTFO!
I pay $15.
Google FFL holders near your city. Find someone with a FFL (maybe does not have a store front) that would be willing to accept your lower.

Smith and Wesson's 15-22 lowers are made out of plastic, I don't believe you can put a standard 5.56 upper on one.

SW MP .22lr does not have a mil-spec lower (it's polymer). Any mil-spec lower such as BCM/RRA/Spikes, etc will except many different calibers. Best all around choice would be to choose one of the mfg lowers you listed. The options of different calibers to use with a mil-spec lower are endless 5.56, 300AAC, 22lr, 9mm, 6.8 just to name a few.

You must be located around me.  All the gun shops around here charge $50-60.

Holy crap!  My FFL charges $10.\

Unless you get a dedicated 22lr rifle like the S&W15-22 or the Umarex "Colt" abortion, a .22lr AR is just a regular AR with a dedicated 22lr upper or even a 5.56 upper with a 22lr conversion kit.

I run my dedicated 22lr upper on the lower form my "goto" 5.56mm rifle.  That way I'm trainig witht eh same trigger, grip, controls, etc.

ask on your hometown forum, or possibly look for gunshows in your area?

$50 is ridiculous

Mine charges $10. $15 is about the standard. $50 is rediculous.
If I'm not mistaken, the S & W uses a polymer lower.

Yeah you've got a ridiculous transfer fee! I had to pay $40 once and I thought that was super high.

I found a really cool local guy that does it for $25 now. I go to him for everything I can't have shipped directly to me.

Check your hometown forum and do a bit of searching. Local forums are also a good place to find info on this.

CMMG out of Missouri makes a 22lr complete rifle based on regular AR receiver. You can remove 22lr upper and install upper of your choice in 5.56.You might contact them and see if they have a stocking dealer in your area.

I use a local pawnshop for transfers...The ones in my area charge $15 to $20.  Can pawnshops do transfers in PA?

I don't know the laws in PA, but couldn't you just buy one FTF off the E&E?

Now that you have a lower and $50 is too much to pay for a transfer.  Buy a dedicated .22 upper.  Not sure of PA rules but in many states they can ship it to your door no FFL fee.

My FFL charges 38.00, it's quite high, but they're more trust worthy than most around here.  Another guy charges depending on his mood, time of day, month of year, etc ...  It's especially bad if you buy from the manufacturer or one of our site sponsors, which he claims you can NOT do, he'll charge ya 50-90 bucks.  Funny, I haven't seen him for some time ...

Yeah, you'll find various rates out there. One place next to where I live charges $75 + a percentage of the gun value for an FFL transfer. Another place down the road charges $10.

I will do some searching..

so my .22lr purchase is not going to work.....

so my options are finder a cheaper FFL and buy a lower off the net OR buy a complete ar off the net and still pay the same $50 FFL fee......

Wait till there is a gun show in your area and pick up a lower there.Or find a gun shop or pawn shop that aren't a bunch of crooks.

Hometown is how I found my FFL.
The lowest around here is still $25.
For pistols I pay $40 because the ffl is just down the block from the local PD - saves a lot of travel time.
We have some shops here that want $100, because they want you to buy through them, and I have also heard that some wont bring in anything that they have in stock, and some try to charge sales tax.
It's all over the place.

I'd also recommend this. The gun shops around me want $50 for the transfer fee. Found a FFL in my neighborhood that does my transfers for $20.
