looking for some feedback on CMMG ar's. i have a friend who is looking at buying one, need some reviews. any help is appreciated!
thanks! |

I own one with about 150 rds through it. Runs great, I have the an m4 16" carbine w/ wasp coating with 1/9 twist and at 25 yds I was getting a fantastic group about the size of a grapefruit. It feels like a solid weapon, mine has the magpul flip up site instead of the carry handle. It's my first AR and well I may not know better but it ran great. What sold me was a swat guy in the store said he had one and liked it over his colt. He said toe to toe the colt jammed 3 times while the cmmg didn't out of 400 rds, but who knows it could be like fish stories so don't take it seriously. What else would you like to know?

My carry handle 20" A4 has been perfect. Quality is very good. Shoots well out to 300 yards.
I had the trigger tuned, smoothed out the edges on the BCG on a polishing wheel, set up the sights for RIBZ, darkened the aperture...I think that's it. I feed it handloads, the 1/7 twist likes the Sierra Match Kings. They seem to actually shoot a little more accurately the further out you shoot. I've only ever taken my AR out to 300 yards so I can't say beyond that. They shoot good, you won't be disappointed. |
| i'm not an expert by any means and i am not a gunsmith, but i think i read somewhere that with the shorter barrell's and the traditional blowback systems, that they will short cycle. does that sound about right? maybe this is the same but something else about the shell expanding and contracting before ejection? i don't know, i just remember reading something similar to that on the shorter barrells. but thanks for the input though. i really appreciate it! |

I had a CMMG upper that was great at popping primers. I really don't see the point of buying a CMMG when there are so many other excellent choices out there now. Every one of our rifles has done this, and CMMG was not capable of fixing the issues after several attempts. |

I'll let everyone else chime in with who is the best and who is junk, but like I said I don't know better but I am happy with my purchase as a good entry level gun. Sputz |

I have a bargain bin CMMG rifle (CMMG lower and upper) and have had a few problems with it. When I received it the receiver extension was screwed in too far making it impossible to join the upper and the lower together and the first time I took it to the range, the adjusting pin on the stock broke causing it to be permanently stuck in the extended position. Also have had FTE's 3 out of the 4 times I've taken it to the range using multiple types of ammo.
Wish I would've gone with a Spikes... |
| well, based on what i'm hearing, i think he might need to pass. doesn't sound to reliable. i know everyone has a different opinion but you can tell pretty quick on this site(which is why i come here)what's hot and what's not! thanks for the input guys, i really appreciate it! |
| I have an upper from them and it is absolutely awesome besides the fact the take down pin holes are slightly off but it still goes together although very tight. Other than that it runs like a champ. I will never buy another thing from them though. Personal reasons. |
|
I picked up a CMMG bargain bin last spring as my first AR. Takedown pins were tight the first time I broke it down and had to use a punch to get them to move. After that they have been easy to push out with firm finger pressure. 600+rounds and I have 4 FTE's. I marked my magazines and can tie the last 2 to a particular magazine. I am still a noob and need to read up to see if the magazine could be the cause or if it is just dumb luck it happens with that magazine.
Customer service has been ok. I had some questions and they answered them in a polite and timely manner. They took time and walked me through field stripping and re assembly at the local show. YMMV |
| I had two CMMG rifles, a M4LE and a 20" A4. I have around 500rds through the A4 and had 1000rds through the M4, zero problems with both of them. Accuracy is good and I ran both .223 and 5.56 ammo through them. I did have a couple of primers pop out with a box of older Q3131a ammo, but I checked the lot number and Win did have some problems with loose primers with that run, I never had any problems with the rest of that ammo or any of the other 5.56 I tried. I ended up selling the M4 because I rather shoot the A4 , and I wanted to buy a new handgun. I've dealt with their CS in the last couple of years since buying the rifles and they always answered my questions promptly. My only complaint is that no one outside of the internet forums or around CMMG's base of operations has heard of them, so people are reluctant to buy one. |
|
Their CS and guns seem to be hit and miss. They've been out of favor on arfcom for some time for this reason. Which really sucks since they are innovative on the 22lr side and used to offer a tub of different brl configurations. I got an upper from another member yrs ago dirt cheap and it's ran like a champ with every kind of ammo you can think of and is extremely accurate with good stuff for a CL brl. I also bought one of the stainless 22lr conversions it's ran like a champ. |
| Definitely pass on CMMG. If you have a problem with their products, and it's likely that you will, they would rather handle your problem over tx or via e-mail. If you decide to send the item(s) back to the factory they have issues diagnosing & actually admitting that there is a problem with the part. Some folks have had good dealings with them, but many have not, including myself (two guns). They couldn't even get my order correct the last time I dealt with them & then they told me I was the one that screwed up. No thanks. I have taken my business elsewhere since there are companies with better QC & CS out there. It's been rumored that CMMG parts are rebadged DPMS parts, however, I have no idea if that's really true. The tight chambers that have been reported with a lot of CMMG's are the same problems with many DPMS guns, so it kind of makes you wonder. I had a non-concentric bore on my 10.3 (another DPMS problem) & the muzzle threads literally peeled off. I wasn't able to run the 14.5 I ordered from them since they sent me a 14.7 & I promptly sent it back only to hear from them that they had not made a mistake with my order & then they charged me a re-stocking fee without any other word from them. I'll stick with DD & BCM now. |

OP, CMMG is fine. Tons of working firearms are out there, mine included.
They did some folks dirty on a barrel buy a few years ago and they get slaughtered on here these days. They used to be bestest Kool-Aid ever berfore that though. Folks on here were telling other people their gun was a pile of trash if CMMG wasn't stamped on it. Typical ARFCOM gay love fest, these days rivaled only by the Larue and BCM fanboys. (I'm guilty of BCM fanboyism myself, I really enjoy my A4 clone, buy from them with confidence also) |

I bought a CMMG back when they were the flavor of the month and it has been great to the tune of a couple of thousand rounds. I know several people that got stuff from their bargain bin that are very happy and I REALLY which I had gotten a CMMG 22LR conversion vs my Spikes dedicated upper. Fads come and go on ARFCOM.

I'm always interested in reading complaints from people.
How long ago were the barrels not concentric? How long ago was the customer service not good? I ask because in my dealings with them over the past 7 months, I have seen nothing but excellent CS and quality in the rifles I have used. I have run suppressors on a 7.5" piston upper, several .22's and a 16" 5.56. No problems at all. I did manage to bust a compression ring on the piston upper and it is with them now. Not trying to argue. Just trying to figure out what I have missed. I remember a few years back when people flocked to CMMG. Same with Bushmaster. I mean if they had problems in the past, but have corrected them, why to keep bashing them, or any other manufacturer for that matter. What's going on with that manufacturer today?

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=145&t=199737 Sorry i couldn't resist man it's on page1 of their forum ![]() Like i said my stuff works great but they need someone dedicated to CS issues. I look in that forum regularly because of the new 22 stuff they are doing. Quoted: I'm always interested in reading complaints from people. How long ago were the barrels not concentric? Im not saying buy or dont buy, just merely offering up an experience. No different than the folks who say they have one with hundreds of thousands of rounds and they run great. The OP asked a question, will gather responses, and will make a decision based upon those responses.
Our troubles with CMMG go back the past 2 years and they still haven't corrected any problems. We gave up and are buying new uppers. Granted we run lots of rounds through our rifles so maybe they just couldn't keep up, but i suspect there are lots of people who have the same complaints i do. I have nothing at stake in what anyone wants to buy. Just trying to share my simple experience with the group. |
| i dont own a cmmg and have never shot one, maybe they are great rifles. But Ive been recently looking at different manufacturers and so many other manufacturers are priced cheaper for the same or better quality and havent gotten any negative posts only positive. Soooo unless cmmg is gonna beat the best deals out there why buy from them?? just asking and its just one persons opinion |
|
I have a very Early CMMG upper. How early? How about a DPMS brl, hand cut feed ramps and a cast front site base early!
I havent shot it much. Just 1,748 Rounds. But it has never had a stoppage of any kind even when using 5.56mm nato pressure 77Gn Nosler OTM or Horn 75Gn "Practise." Its a reliable accurate upper. At a time when 1:7 uppers were rare. |
| Just my 2 cents. I purchase one of their "Bargin Bin" rifles while they still had them available at their store in Columbia. It is a Double Star lower and CMMG Upper, 18" chrome barrel with 1/7 twist. I have not put to many rounds through it yet, <250 rounds. It has not had any faliures and I have put both 223 and 5.56 rounds through it. I have only fire 55 gr bullets but am looking forward to firing heaver one, 62 gr, but they have been hard to find locally. I have seen good prices online and thinking that is the way I will go. I Have a couple of Magpul 30 rn magazines as well as GI mags and all have worked well except for a 20 rd Colt Magazine that is a tight fit and it does not drop out easily like my other mags due. The only issue I have with the upper receiver is that is not marked in anyway that it is made by CMMG. The guys at the store said on "Bargin Bin Rifles", they are not marked and that is a reason why the lower price. BTW a fellow coworker also picked a "Bargin Bin Rifle" with a 16" barrell and he has enjoyed it. The problem he had with it was it had several misfire. I looke at the primers and it appeared the firing pin was not hitting the primer with enough force. It was leaving a light impression on the primers that fired. He brought it back to Black Rifle and the guys there swapped out BCG and he has not had any more problems with misfires. |

I would stay away. I was in the process of ordering from them when I needed to call them to clarify something. The guy was an asshole and tried to act like they were doing me a favor for even talking to me. So I told them to cancel my order and not bother about it and they proceeded to tell me I wasnt welcome to order from them anyhow and if I ever made a purchase from them they would auto cancel my order. Messed up thing is the fact that they charged my card over $250 more than I authorized and didnt bother asking for permission. They simply emailed me that they added the charges, which pissed me off. At least call to authorize and explain the issue. Then if I call in to ask about it dont act like an asshole. All I was looking for was at least some apology saying that they shouldnt have charged me several hundred dollars more than I authorized. Considering it was my debit card, it screwed my checking account up. But in the end they didnt apologize and acted like jerks, then told me that they didnt need or want my business anyhow. *This was several years ago when CMMG was still one of the flavors on Arfcom and there was a lot of panic buying going on as well.
Since then I know that they have mostly fallen out of the good graces of the majority of arfcommers Ive talked to. And as far as their products go. I know two people with CMMG products that I have had an opportunity to use. One was a .22 upper that had multiple BCG issues and needed repairs several times. The other was a standard M4 style AR in 5.56. That had multiple failures as well, though I cant recall the issues specifically. With all of the great brands out there such as Spikes, I would not pick a CMMG. Their CS is garbage and their products are only ok. I wouldnt rank them any higher than most commercial AR's let alone Spikes or BCM. You can definitely do better. |
|
I bought a new MOD4SA 16" carbine for $650 pre-Obama. Great little rifle. There was some slop between the recievers, but nothing you couldn't fix with an accuwedge.
The issues I did have were a canted FSB, and the pins in the FSB were cheap as hell and came apart when I removed it. Some of the springs were pretty cheap, too. With that said, I sold it at the 1700 round count with having zero failures/malfunctions up to that point. Once I put a rail on it and some nice sights, I was getting about 1.5 - 2" groups at 100 yds. I wouldn't get another one based on my preferences now, but if it's all I could get, I'd be happy with another CMMG. They have good quality entry level rifles, and I believe they have some nicer stuff for more money, as well. |
|
I bought 2 complete CMMG rifles back in 09. An M4 carbine and a midlength. The M4 has a detachable carry handle and the midlength, a flat top with a GG&G buis. Since then, I have put several thousands of rounds through each of them and both have given me no problems. I haven't used the CS, so can't say good or bad.
But just as others have said, there now better options. For an entry level AR, they're a good reliable product. |
| I have a CMMG 14.7" M4gery upper. I got it back in 2007 when CMMG was all the rage here. Its got a couple thousand rounds through it - had the extractor go out but other than that its a trooper. Accurate and besides when the extractor went out, no malfunctions or hiccups. It seems CMMG got rid of a lot of the options they use to have, though. |
| My build consists of a CMMG barrel, complete lower, and stripped upper. The finish and fit on the upper and lower is as close to perfection as you can get. Great quality parts. I don't know the specs on the their BCGs but their barrels and receivers are top notch. |

CMMG is hit and miss. Some guys get good, functional stuff from them. But you never know where they're sourcing their parts from month to month. A lot of DPMSish quality of stuff has come from them.
A buddy of mine was in on a middy group buy a few years back and CMMG messed up on the location of the FSBs or something. With BCM and DD out there... there's no logical reason to be rolling the dice on companies like DPMS and CMMG. |
